The Gigwatcher 31/10/2007

Blue Pencil

Radiohead's foray into digital downloads has prompted more established artists to experiment with the technology.

Following on from the "pay what you want to" experiment with In Rainbows, Sir Cliff Richard is tweaking the concept by dropping the cost of his new album depending on the demand. The more people who download the album, the less they end up paying.

So many punchlines, not enough time.

Owing to illness, legendary singer Englebert Humperdinck has unfortunately had to cancel his performance at The Guildhall, Portsmouth, on Tuesday 6th November. A rescheduled date has yet to be announced, punters requiring refunds should contact their point of purchase. A new date for Richard Hawley's cancelled gig at The Guildhall, Southampton has been announced. The gig will now take place on Wednesday 6th February 2008.

Indie club night Waster has its first Halloween Special at Envy in Portsmouth this evening. Live music is provided by Kill Kenada and Cut The Blue Wire, with DJs from the Southsea Mafia spinning the pumpkin covered wheels of steel inbetween. Entrance is only £1 before 2300, £3 after.

Club 12th Hour celebrates its first birthday this Friday, 2nd November, with band-packed evening of entertainment at South Parade Pier. Confirmed as appearing are The Elements, The Exits, Gilkicker, Frank Hamilton and The Cartel. Tickets are £6 in advance from Little Johnny Russell's, otherwise it's £7 on the door.

Hardly Heroes, Not Good Enough For Tony and Split Sixty will be appearing at The Wedgewood Rooms next Wednesday, 7th November, when the venue will be hosting an autism benefit gig. Monies raised will aid a local family to run a Son Rise Program, an educational treatment for children with autism. Tickets are £6.

Portsmouth's Lee Paul Spragg and similarly local dubsters The MightyZ AllStars have the guest slots at the (apparently Michael Jackson themed) Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club at The Milton Arms tomorrow, Thursday 1st November. As usual, after the guest bands, those so inclined can take to the stage to entertain the crowd (there's a two song limit). Doors open at 1900 and, as admission is FREE, it's advisable to get there early.

And that's it for another week. This afternoon I have mostly been listening to Gogol Bordello and the most excellent Bizarro by The Wedding Present. Join me next week when I'll be looking for the Red Panda.
