The Gigwatcher 31/10/2007

Blue Pencil

Radiohead's foray into digital downloads has prompted more established artists to experiment with the technology.

Following on from the "pay what you want to" experiment with In Rainbows, Sir Cliff Richard is tweaking the concept by dropping the cost of his new album depending on the demand. The more people who download the album, the less they end up paying.

So many punchlines, not enough time.

Owing to illness, legendary singer Englebert Humperdinck has unfortunately had to cancel his performance at The Guildhall, Portsmouth, on Tuesday 6th November. A rescheduled date has yet to be announced, punters requiring refunds should contact their point of purchase. A new date for Richard Hawley's cancelled gig at The Guildhall, Southampton has been announced. The gig will now take place on Wednesday 6th February 2008.

Indie club night Waster has its first Halloween Special at Envy in Portsmouth this evening. Live music is provided by Kill Kenada and Cut The Blue Wire, with DJs from the Southsea Mafia spinning the pumpkin covered wheels of steel inbetween. Entrance is only £1 before 2300, £3 after.

Club 12th Hour celebrates its first birthday this Friday, 2nd November, with band-packed evening of entertainment at South Parade Pier. Confirmed as appearing are The Elements, The Exits, Gilkicker, Frank Hamilton and The Cartel. Tickets are £6 in advance from Little Johnny Russell's, otherwise it's £7 on the door.

Hardly Heroes, Not Good Enough For Tony and Split Sixty will be appearing at The Wedgewood Rooms next Wednesday, 7th November, when the venue will be hosting an autism benefit gig. Monies raised will aid a local family to run a Son Rise Program, an educational treatment for children with autism. Tickets are £6.

Portsmouth's Lee Paul Spragg and similarly local dubsters The MightyZ AllStars have the guest slots at the (apparently Michael Jackson themed) Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club at The Milton Arms tomorrow, Thursday 1st November. As usual, after the guest bands, those so inclined can take to the stage to entertain the crowd (there's a two song limit). Doors open at 1900 and, as admission is FREE, it's advisable to get there early.

And that's it for another week. This afternoon I have mostly been listening to Gogol Bordello and the most excellent Bizarro by The Wedding Present. Join me next week when I'll be looking for the Red Panda.

In Rainbows

I'm not quite sure how Simply Red are going to split up, which is what Mick Hucknall has today announced they'll be doing next year, as it's basically just him and some session musicians keeping the brand alive. Does he mean he's retiring the name or that he's going to cut himself in twain?

Well, you can hope can't you?

Dick Dale's European Tour has been cancelled on medical advice, meaning that the scheduled gig at The Brook on Wednesday 14th November has been crossed off the list; it's hoped that the tour will be rescheduled for early 2008. In other news the Powerman 5000 gig at The Joiners this Friday, 26th October, which had been rescheduled from May, has been cancelled. And so has the Ricky Cool & The Hoola Boola Boys gig at The Cellars at Eastney this Saturday, 27th October. Punters are advised to contact their point of purchase for refunds.

As mentioned last week, October is when Oxfam's month long musical fund-raising event, Oxjam, causes lots of impromptu gigs for a good cause to pop up all over the place. This Saturday, 27th October, The Talking Heads hosts Oxjam Southampton, which boasts a packed line-up including Moise, Pellumair, Dr Joel, Cinemascopes, Clave de Sol and The Sarah Griffin Band. Tickets are £5, available on the door. The Big Oxjam Solent Climax will be held in Victoria Park, Portsmouth earlier the same day; the full line-up for this afternoon event is yet to be announced, but Cool Banana have confirmed they'll be taking part.

Tonight's Waster features live music from Black Arc and Hold Fast, plus DJ sets from the Southsea Mafia. Entrance to the new indie club night at Envy in Portsmouth is a bargain £1 before 2300 (and a mere £3 after that).

The guest slots at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club at The Barn at The Milton Arms tomorrow, Thursday 25th October, are filled by Portsmouth based blues rockers Zoofy & The Spoonfruit and Hayling Island's Jennifer Ellen. After the bands the stage is open to all comers to try their luck at entertaining the crowd. Doors open at 1900 so, as admission is FREE, you're advised to get there early.

And that about wraps it up for this week; this afternoon I have mostly been listening to Guillemots and the new Radiohead album. Join me next week when I'll be dancing with tears in my eyes.

The Gigwatcher 17/10/2007

It was the astroturf, honest.

Pete Doherty has admitted he can't remember missing all those gigs he didn't turn up for.

Honest.

No, I can't think why that might be either.

Before all that though this Sunday, 21st October, the Orange Rooms in Southampton will be hosting The Ring Master's Jam, featuring live music from Fleeing New York, Lebbex and The Organ Donors (as well as, so it says on their website, a Burlesque strip show. Lawks!).

Long time listener, first time caller.

The quirky chaps from Oxford have done it again; breaking the system from outside with a downloadable album the price of which depends on the conscience of the punter.

In principle it's an excellent idea. In practice I reckon most will pay nothing at first, only coming back with their hard-earned if they like what they've heard (if at all). But I'm cynical like that.

No, really I am.

Paul Young's tex-mex band, Los Pacaminos, have been forced to cancel their gig at The Brook this Saturday, 13th October, on doctor's orders. Punters are advised to stop crying in their chilli and contact their point of purchase for ticket refunds.

Prettyboy Promotions, who previously brought live indie entertainment to the masses at The Registry with The Thursday Thing, have a new evening on the go. Waster takes place every Wednesday night at Envy in Portsmouth; tonight sees live music from Floor+Walls plus a DJ set from XFM's Eddy Temple-Morris. Tickets are available on the door.

The Wedgewood Rooms will be pounding with electro beats this Saturday, 13th October, as the Sumo and Underyournose club nights take each other on. As well as DJ sets from Udy and Brett Lawrence there'll also be live performances from The Exits, Get Shakes and Kid Carpet. Tickets are £7 and should be available on the door.

London pop/rock band Storey and singer/guitarist Baz fill the guest slots at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club tomorrow, Thursday 11th October. Afterwards the stage will be thrown open to all comers, each of whom have a two song limit within which to entertain the crowd. The doors of The Barn at The Milton Arms open at 1900, admission is FREE and you're advised to arrive early.

And finally, tomorrow is John Peel Day 2007 and all manner of musical events are occurring up and down the country in celebration of the memory of John Robert Parker Ravenscroft; these include a guerilla gig in Southampton (somewhere near the University apparently) and the co-opting of the Oxjam gig at The Railway Inn in Winchester. More information is available on the BBC Radio 1 website.

Times up, pencils down, that's me done for another week. Today I have mostly been listening to Super Furry Animals and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, with a bit of Black Grape on the side. Join me next week when I'll be walking on the spot.

The Gigwatcher 03/10/2007

Do you want fries with that?

Apparently Mick Jagger loves all the Rolling Stones' hits and never tires of singing them.

Yes, even Harlem Shuffle.

No, I don't believe him either.

Portsmouth Scene Promotions will be celebrating their first birthday with the fourth of their very successful 'Best Of Portsmouth' showcase events. The line-up this time includes The Racketeers, The Elements, The Way, The Model Village and Revolution 74, all of whom will be appearing at Portsmouth Guildhall on Saturday 20th October. Tickets are £9 in advance (slightly more on the door, if available).

This week's guest slots at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club are filled by My Endeavour and Mojito; the bands will be onstage at The Barn at The Milton Arms tomorrow, Thursday 4th October, between 1915-2115. As usual, after the guest artistes, the stage will be thrown open to all comers to do their thing (be advised, there's a two song limit per performer). Admission is FREE, doors open at 1900 and you're advised to arrive early.

The sudden death of Rob Wicked, landlord of The Fawcett Inn, has thrown the future of the pub into jeopardy. Friends of the man and the venue are therefore holding a special benefit at The Albert Tavern, South Parade Pier, on Friday 12th October to ensure his legacy lives on. Confirmed to appear so far are Autons, Kangaroo Moon, Here & Now and Bubbledubble (and there'll be a chilled DJ set from the chaps at Deltawave as well). Doors 2000-0100, tickets are £9 and will be available on the door only.

And that about wraps it up for this week. Today I have mostly been listening to Editors (who were really rather good at The Guildhall last night, even if they did think they were in Norwich) and The Shins. Join me next week when I'll be painting myself into a corner.
