Tunes, not chat
As much as I loved Massive Attack's set at Portsmouth Guildhall last night, and an excellent array of tunes and arresting visuals it was too (including a nice Terry Wogan tribute), my enjoyment of said gig was somewhat hampered by the drunken chatterboxes stood behind me who willfully bleated on throughout the show. It is my gig-going bugbear. My prime punter annoyance. Why pay £30+ for a ticket if you're going to talk all the way through the gig? Why cheer loudly when Horace Andy takes to the stage if you're just going to gab during his performance? Surely not just to piss me off, that they could've done far easier and cheaper than spending £££ for a ticket plus whatever to cover the amount of booze they'd imbibed. No matter, the Dave abides and, by shuffling my carcass slightly forward, I moved myself just about out of earshot (though slightly more up close and personal to some flat-cap wearing hipsters then I'd like) and could enjoy the show (and damn good it was too).
By my own admission, and no surprise to you reading this, I'm a bit of gig whore. I have been to a lot of shows over the years and, yes, I've sadly stood through too many that have been spoiled by someone crapping on about something when they should be listening. Venues have bars, if you want a chat go and stand there, prop up the counter and chew the fat. Don't stand next to me and talk to your mate about your favourite song, the one you want played at your wedding, that you then talk loudly through when the artist plays it (that was one time seeing Ed Harcourt) or just witter on incessantly and ignore the very British looks of umbrage that are being thrown in your direction (as happened at gigs by such fine artists as John Grant, Midlake and Sleaford Mods to name but three).
Last night's experience reminded me of times in The Cellars (RIP) where they had a notice pinned near the bar advising that it was a "listening venue"; if you spoke too loudly during a set then one of the bar staff would tell you off, and they weren't kidding either. Slightly less full on is a poster campaign by Independent Venue Week that makes the point very clearly; if the band is interrupting your conversation you're in the wrong place. Ideally venues shouldn't have to post up nanny state posters telling punters how to behave, nor should I have to waste pixels venting a small amount of spleen about some people I don't know who couldn't care less, but sadly that's just the way it is.

Jesus Jones - 'International Bright Young Things'
So there I was, wilfing across the vast expanse of the internet as I'm usually wont to do of a lunchtime, when I stumbled across the news that 90's pop/rock combo Jesus Jones have reformed. And yes, I may have done a little happy dance.
Mike Edwards and chums are planning two 'thank you for your patience' gigs in November, one in London and the other in Birmingham, with plans afoot to tour the UK next year [crosses fingers for Portsmouth Guildhall].
OK, so the gigs aren't local but, well, any excuse to play this..

Ghostpoet at The Railway & The Registry
Fresh from playing Bestival singer/producer Ghostpoet has embarked on a tour of the UK which takes in two stops on the South Coast this week. The Mercury Prize nominee will be playing Winchester's venerable venue The Railway on Wednesday, 5th October, with support coming from from Craig's Band and Brighton's Woo!Worths. Tickets are available, priced £8 in advance, from the venue or Entertainment24.
The following evening, Thursday 6th October, the action moves to Portsmouth for the headline slot of Churchgonewild at The Registry. Support comes courtesy of Breton and Sumo DJs Kry Wolf. Entrance for this gig is FREE (no, really, I'm not making it up), which is nice.

Southsea Fest preview
One of the great things about living in the Portsmouth area (aside from the close proximity of my favourite venue and the exquisite joy and pain of supporting the local football team) is Southsea Fest; this annual event, now in its 5th year, turns Albert Road into a showcase of new and interesting music with various pubs and venues along the thoroughfare becoming stages for the day. As festivals go it ticks all the boxes; there's a variety of bands to suit most tastes, the beer is reasonably priced and neither rain nor mud can interfere with your enjoyment.
Over the past few years I've enjoyed stumbling across many bands that I'd not previously heard of (no, really), some of whom have gone on to great things whilst some have stayed in the shadows. I've bought CDs, stuffed my pockets with stickers and signed up for mailing lists. I've also seen a large mouse be interviewed for TV and ended up looking after a three-legged wooden pig for an hour, but those are stories for another time.
Moving swiftly on, I've perused the line-up and picked five of the many, many fine acts playing tomorrow that I'd like to see, as follows:
Dry The River
2210-2300 @ The Globe Inn
A five piece from London that produce a mellow alt-folk layered with violins and very distinctive vocals.
Clock Opera
2120-2150 @ The Wedgewood Rooms
I'm fairly sure I caught these as a support for someone awhile back. I can't remember who they supported, or when, but I do recall that they made a very good impression.
Trophy Wife
2210-2240 @ The Wedgewood Rooms (Club NME stage)
I caught a snippet of Trophy Wife's Bestival set at the Bandstand last weekend, excellent synthy indie (with guitar noodlings) from Oxford.
Jumping Ships
1400-1435 @ The Edge of The Wedge (BSM & Alcopop! stage)
To be honest I don't really know all that much about Jumping Ships. I know they're from Brighton and I know that they create a spikey indie pop noise; I've been to Brighton, I like spikey indie pop, and I like the way Jumping Ships play it.
Apollo's Arrows
1420-1450 @ Southsea Social Club
Apollo's Arrows hail from just up the road, a Southampton trio that produce a powerfully delivered alternative sound (I'm sure there's more than a sprinkle of At The Drive-In in there). Nice.

Mud Morganfield at The Cellars
Mud Morganfield, the eldest son of Blues legend Muddy Waters, returns to Portsmouth tomorrow night. Fresh from touring the globe Mud returns to The Cellars with his band The Dirty Aces (featuring guitarist Ronni Buysack-Boysen, Ian Jennings on Double Bass, Mike Hellier on drums and harmonica player West Weston) for a damn fine evening of Chicago Blues.

Summer Ska Funkin' Picnic 2011
Southsea's Bandstand stages a last hurrah for the Summer tomorrow when the Southsea Mafia hold their Summer Ska Annual Picnic. The musical fun and games are rescheduled from June when, as has happened a lot with events at the Bandstand this summer, bad weather caused the originally planned event to be cancelled.
The ska-packed line-up features live music from Butserfest Battle of the Bands finalists Skaraman, the precocious Huw Olesker & The Barebackers, Ugly Auntie and the mighty Big Topp. If that wasn't enough the Southsea Mafia DJs will be spinning a selection of tunes inbetween and afterward.
The shenanigans start at at midday, run through til 1600, and there are rumours of an after party (at an as yet undisclosed location) on the event's Facebook page. This is a FREE event, all you need to do is turn up and enjoy yourself.

Kent Duchaine brings the Blues to Pompey
Delta Blues guitarist Kent DuChaine will pay a rare visit to Portsmouth this week when his current tour rolls into town. The Minnesota native, who bizarrely found his way to the Blues via the liner notes on an Eric Clapton LP, will be ably supported by his classic 1934 National Steel guitar, Leadbessie, when he plays The Golden Eagle in Southsea this Friday, 2nd September.
Over the years Kent has backed up or supported such Blues greats as Boogie Woogie Red, Eddie Burns, Luther Tucker, Albert Collins and Howlin' Wolf; in 1989 he met legendary Bluesman Johnny Shines and, over the next three years, played over 200 shows together before Shines' death in 1992. Since then Kent has travelled the four corners, armed with Leadbessie, playing the music he loves to appreciative audiences around the globe.

Wilko Johnson for The Wedgewood Rooms
A few years ago, at the Blues On The Farm Festival just outside Chichester, I stumbled upon a jaw-dropping sight; a mad-eyed bald man pinballing around the stage, fixing the audience with an electrically charged stare, all the while delivering scorching riffs aplenty.
I'll have another chance to experience this spectable when Wilko Johnson, for it was he, plays The Wedgewood Rooms on Sunday 23rd October. Ably backed by Dylan Howe on drums and virtuoso bass player Norman Watt-Roy, the ex-Blockhead and ex-Dr. Feelgood guitarist has visited Pompey several times over the years (notably to highly appreciative audiences at The Cellars) but now brings his solo set to a larger venue.
Tickets are available from the venue now, priced at £12.50, with support from recent Showcase entrants The Vortex Buzz and local legends The Good Time Charlies.

Gosport Waterfront Festival 2011
The Gosport Waterfront Festival, an three day musical shindig held annually in the town's Walpole Park, starts tomorrow night. In previous years the line-up has tended toward a mix of local bands, cover acts and and artists who were big on the scene several years ago (but have fallen off the radar somewhat) and this year is no exception (well, if it ain't broke, etc). However, owing to rising costs, a cut in funding and a lack of full sponsorship, the organisers have had to charge an entrance fee for the first time; entrance to the festival site will now set you back £1 per night.
Once again the Friday night is made up of predominantly local acts, including Wedgewood Rooms Showcase finalists Melodramas and local Punk outfit Night of Treason. Local rockers Superfly and South Coast Pink Floyd specialists Perfect Alibi warm things up on the Saturday before headliner Chas Hodges (as in Chas & Dave) gets a chorus of Gertcha, Rabbit and such out of the punters. The fun draws to a close on Sunday when Toploader (yeah, I couldn't believe it either) get Gosport dancing in the moonlight (sorry).

The Drums playing The Pyramids
New York's indie popsters The Drums, who release second album Portamento next month, have announced a string of UK dates this November and December. Notable on the list is a return visit to The Pyramids on Tuesday 6th December; the band played there previously on the 2010 Shockwaves NME Awards Tour. Tickets go on sale this coming Friday, available from The Wedgewood Rooms, priced at £14.50.
Scroobius Pip coming to The Wedge
It seems like it was only Saturday night that the sterling video for Introdiction was first thrust in front of me, my drunken eyes widening as the bearded wordsmith defoliated his face fuzz before setting about his televisual hovel. And that's probably because it was; shame on me for not watching it before. Moving swiftly on, today comes news that Scroobius Pip will be hitting The Wedgewood Rooms this November, on Thursday 10th to be precise. Tickets are £9, on sale now from the venue, with solo album Distraction Pieces released on September 19th (if you can't wait til then, you can always bid on his beard shavings).

NME Radar Tour line-up announced
From the high-pitched warbling of La Roux to the raucous stage antics of Crystal Castles, the NME Radar Tour always offers the experience of something different, interesting or down-right weird. Earlier this year the crowd at the Wedgewood Rooms were treated to the delights of Grouplove and the awesome Anna Calvi when the Spring leg of the tour landed in Portsmouth (unfortunately I arrived too late to experience The History of Apple Pie).
The line-up for the Autumn leg of the tour features in this week's edition of the NME; Wolf Gang headline with post-punk five-some S.C.U.M. taking the second space on the bill. The remaining slot is split between Stockholm's Niki & The Dove and Australian thrash popsters DZ Deathrays.
The peripatetic tour stumbles into Portsmouth on Tuesday 4th October with the venerable Wedgewood Rooms again hosting. After a spell away in northern climes the tour returns to the South Coast a fortnight later, pitching up at Brighton's Concorde 2 on Monday 17th October when all four bands will feature.
Tickets go on general sale this coming Friday.

Guillemots on a stick
Indie pop rockers Guillemots have announced details of their Autumn tour, including two dates down south; the band play Portsmouth's Wedgewood Rooms on Sunday 30th October and are at The Old Market in Brighton the following night, Monday 31st October. Expect to hear chunks of new album Walk The River alongside a selection of tunes from the band's first two albums and, more than likely, that Billy Joel song as well.

Ugly Duckling returning to Blighty
Long Beach's favourite sons Ugly Duckling provided one of my most enjoyable gig experiences of last year, in a packed Drift In The City of all places. The Californian three piece delivered an uplifting set of beats and rhymes that got even a Pompey crowd moving and, after giving 100% on stage, the guys made the time and effort to meet and greet afterward.
Details of a new UK tour have now started to appear on the Yudee forum and amongst the dates listed so far is a return visit to Portsmouth and a stop in Brighton; Andy C, Dizzy Dustin and Young Einstein will be at The Highlight in Gunwharf on Monday 10th October and The Haunt in Brighton on Saturday 15th October.

The Computers versus Southampton
In amongst the regular glut of spam and eggs that filled my email inbox today was a natty missive from indie/punk noise merchants The Computers. I was lucky enough to catch the four piece at The Wedgewood Rooms when they supported The Duke Spirit but, and maybe it was that last pint, for the life of me I can't remember signing their mailing list. Whatever, scrawl my name across the sheet of A4 I obviously did.
Getting to the point, the band have announced that they'll be joining The Subways on their Autumn tour, rocking up at Southampton University on Monday 3rd October. Before then however the band will be supporting Face To Face at The Joiners on Tuesday 30th August. Which is nice.

Emily Barker & The Cellars at Eastney
Earlier this year I enjoyed a marvellous evening at The Cellars in Eastney sampling the music of Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo. I must confess that my interest in attending said gig was a mixture of "Oh, they did the theme to Wallander didn't they?" and "Ahh.. they've supported Frank Turner so they must be good".
And yes, they played Nostalgia (aka the tune that plays over the opening credits whilst a blue hued Kenneth Branagh emotes), and yes, they were very good; a beautifully performed set that resulted in my being strangely drawn to the merch desk at the end of the evening.

Bah Humbug
Try as I might to avoid X Factor, even I managed to stumble across the news that the winner of this year's competition will be covering Leonard Cohen's classic Hallelujah. That's not to say whoever wins is guaranteed the Christmas #1 slot this year; already a wave of internet protest has seen Jeff Buckley's take on the song start to rise up the charts.
Strangely, a similar thing occurred in the US when a contestant on American Idol performed the song...

This week indie club night Waster holds its second annual Winter Wonderland, a fantastically festive indie affair featuring the best alternative tunes in town courtesy of the Southsea Mafia DJs. The doors of Portsmouth's Liquid nightclub will be open from 2200 tomorrow, Thursday 11th December, with admission just £2.20 before 2300, rising to £3.20 after (though if you're in festive fancy dress entry is gratis). It's a Christmas Chaos at The Wedgewood Rooms this Saturday, 13th December; Secret Santas Will Chump and DJ Lemon will be taking care of the festive business in the Main Room whilst Marky Marc handles the tunes in The Chaos Lounge. Doors open from 2200, with admission £5 on the door.
Dutch punk bands Brito and Antillectual top the bill at the STE Punk Collective's all-dayer this Sunday, 14th December. The Hobbit again hosts the irregular shindig, which also features sets from local bands Gordon Gano's Army, Whole In The Head and Constant State Of Terror. Admission is £6 on the door, with music from 1400 through till 2100.
The RMA Tavern hosts an evening of fine burlesque entertainment this Sunday, 14th December, courtesy of HMS Pin Up. In addition to performances from Dolly Divine, Poison Ivy, Bea deVile and Bella De Jac, there'll also be live music from local band The Edible Stems. Try as I might to avoid X Factor, even I managed to stumble across the news that the winner of this year's competition will be covering Leonard Cohen's classic Hallelujah. That's not to say whoever wins is guaranteed the Christmas #1 slot this year; already a wave of internet protest has seen Jeff Buckley's take on the song start to rise up the charts.
Strangely, a similar thing occurred in the US when a contestant on American Idol performed the song...

Santa will be getting on his good foot at The Wedgewood Rooms this Saturday, 6th December, when Funkt-If-Ino hold their Christmas Extravaganza. Resident DJs Darth Fader and Chewbazza will be dishing up a hot helping of festive helping of disco, funk and soul to get you in the festive mood. Admission is £5, doors from 2200.
The Talking Heads hosts Southampton singer-songwriter Ben Dlugokecki's 6th Annual Xmas Xtravaganza this Saturday, 6th December. The line-up for this year features local bands The Warm, The Bizets and The Reservoirs, plus Ben's band Dlugokecki (who will have learned some special Christmas covers for the occasion). The first band will be onstage at 1930, tickets are £5 in advance and £7 on the night.
Fareham based popster Joe Ward and Portsmouth indie four-piece Sunset Mission will be the musical guests at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club tomorrow, Thursday 4th December. As usual, there'll be FREE admission to The Barn at The Milton Arms, with doors open at 1900 and live music from 2000. The regular Open Mike session will follow from 2200 through till Midnight. Waster unleashes its own brand of Thursday night mayhem tomorrow at Portsmouth's Liquid Envy nightclub, with Will Chump and Udy of the Southsea Mafia DJs pumping out the finest selection of indiepunkelectroraverock in town. Doors from 2200-0230, entrance is £2.20 before 2300 (£3.20 after), and more information can be found on the event's Facebook page.
Funkt-If-Ino descends on Drift in Southsea this Saturday, 29th November, for an evening of funk, disco, soul and hip hop with residents Darth Fader and Chewbazza. Doors from 2100-0300; admission is £3 before 2300, £5 after. Further details can be found on Facebook.
Chaos reigns at The Wedgewood Rooms this Saturday, 29th November, with DJs Will Chump and Lemon taking charge of the Main Room and Marky Marc in the Chaos Lounge. Admission is £5 on the door, with entry from 2200; the sounds go through to 0300, with last admission at 0100. If you're in need of a warm up the Edge of The Wedge will be hosting Edge of Chaos, with Tom Dangerous and Rusty Sheriff, from 1930 till 2300, and admission is FREE!
Karl Lost (Phatndurty) and Ignition (Out-break) are the guest DJs at Kiss My Bass this month, joining residents Udy, Vol.1, Eratik Behaviour and Fotza at Southsea's Havana Bar this Saturday, 29th November, for another large portion of beats, breaks and electro goodness. Portsmouth trance night Deltawave will be celebrating its 11th birthday this Friday, 28th November, with a night of trippy tunes at The Fawcett Inn. Doors from 2000.
Club promoters Contact have organised a reunion weekender for legendary club Sterns this weekend, featuring many of the DJs from the original rave era. Amongst the DJs listed as appearing are Lenny D, Altern8, Bamo, Kelly Wainwright, Simon Bassline, Jackmaster, DJ Vibes, Dezert Rat, Skinny, Timmi Magic, Dreem Teem, Kenny Ken, Loomsey and Dr S Gachet. The music starts on Friday 28th November, running through till Sunday 30th, at Mill Rythe Holiday Resort on Hayling Island. Tickets are available in advance, via the promoters, priced at £30 (24 hour pass), £50 (48 hour pass) or £95 (full weekend pass, with accommodation). The guest artists at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club this week are local singer-songwriter Leigh Mary Stokes and acoustic folkster Pete Christie. The doors of The Barn at The Milton Arms will be open from 1900 tomorrow night, Thursday 27th November, with music from 2000. The Open Mike session follows from 2200 through till 2330.
