"two up, two down, you're a frown in a gown"
A short stroll from historic Fort Brockhurst, squirrelled away in an industrial estate, is Gosport's premier rehearsal and recording space Quay West Studio. Over the years the folks behind this fine enterprise have welcomed many musicians through its doors and, since becoming involved with the Wickham Festival, have booked bands across that shindig's stages.
Portsmouth four-piece Neverman have both recorded at Quay West and been booked by them, recently playing one of the studio's curated gigs at Saint John's Church. The band are due back at Quay West soon to record their next single, Spineless, but ahead of that being released I've given their current release a spin.
If you're a fan of melodic alt-rock, particularly that delivered by Scandinavian bands such as Moi Caprice or The Kissaway Trail, then Too Much Waste may well float your boat (or båd as they say in Denmark). The slightly affected vocal, with its faint warble, sings over shimmery guitars and reflects on how life might not run the way you expect it to. Admittedly, on first listen, the rhyming of the verses may grate with their reminders of Brian Molko's worst excesses, but all is forgiven when the wall of guitars and the melodic chorus hits.
For a band that were new to scene last year this bodes well for Neverman's future, and I look forward to hearing the next single, I just hope they kick that rhyming dictionary into touch.

Cool Gig in a Church #3 - Capital Fuzz
Gosport's Quay West Studios return to St John's Church in March, hosting another of their successful Cool Gig In A Church events which have so far showcased the likes of local bands such as Hooli, Wyte Stag and Neverman. The third instalment welcomes Portsmouth indie rockers Marmalade Moonshine and, fresh from headlining The Loft stage at Icebreaker 2019, rock four-piece Capital Fuzz to the Forton Road institution.
Cool Gig In A Church 3 takes place on Friday 1st March and, in addition to the lure of a cheap bar (ID required) and excellent acoustics, entrance to the gig is FREE (although a suggested donation can be made at the door). Which is nice, isn't it?

Records & Real Ale (and a raffle)
Since opening in Gosport last year second-hand record shop A Slice of Vinyl has quickly and quietly established itself as the biggest little record shop in town. Located on the first floor above Katie's Vinyl Bar & Kitchen, on the pedestrianised High Street, the tiny shop offers a wide and constantly updating selection of new and old vinyl.
Building on this reputation A Slice of Vinyl, also organisers of the Gosport Record Fair, have joined forces with another of Gosport's finest, producers of real ales and craft lagers, Fallen Acorn, to combine their shared love of vinyl and good ale by hosting a record fair at the brewery.
The fun starts at 11am this coming Saturday, 2nd February, with ample opportunity to both procure that album you've been looking for (and sample some of Fallen Acorn's excellent beers) until the shutters roll down at 5pm.
I must confess that, as much as I enjoy a good tune by itself, a good tune enjoyed with a refreshing alcoholic beverage is always a welcoming prospect (however I have found that a surfeit of ale can impact on the already small amount of restraint I have when it comes to buying shiny records).
Entrance to the event is FREE however an optional entry fee of 50p-£1 can be paid at the door; all monies collected in this manner will be donated to Tonic - Music for Mental Health, a Portsmouth-based charity that both raises awareness and challenges the stigma associated with mental illness, via music and art based events.
And yes, there's a raffle too.

Gosport Waterfront Festival 2011
The Gosport Waterfront Festival, an three day musical shindig held annually in the town's Walpole Park, starts tomorrow night. In previous years the line-up has tended toward a mix of local bands, cover acts and and artists who were big on the scene several years ago (but have fallen off the radar somewhat) and this year is no exception (well, if it ain't broke, etc). However, owing to rising costs, a cut in funding and a lack of full sponsorship, the organisers have had to charge an entrance fee for the first time; entrance to the festival site will now set you back £1 per night.
Once again the Friday night is made up of predominantly local acts, including Wedgewood Rooms Showcase finalists Melodramas and local Punk outfit Night of Treason. Local rockers Superfly and South Coast Pink Floyd specialists Perfect Alibi warm things up on the Saturday before headliner Chas Hodges (as in Chas & Dave) gets a chorus of Gertcha, Rabbit and such out of the punters. The fun draws to a close on Sunday when Toploader (yeah, I couldn't believe it either) get Gosport dancing in the moonlight (sorry).

Big Brother Soul's World Cup Special
The hardest working Soul band on the South Coast, Big Brother Soul, return to Gosport on Friday 9th July for another hot and sweaty evening of Stax & Motown at The White Hart. As the gig occurs at the tail end of the month-long football fest in South Africa, and there is of course the remote chance England make it to the final, the poster has a decidedly 1966 look and feel to it...

As much as I like the Gorillaz/Jamie Hewlett trail for the Beeb's Olympics coverage, I'd have much rather the cartoon band covered Godiego's excellent theme song to the classic 80's TV show.

The Southsea Mafia DJs are again are in charge of Waster this week, supplying the masses with a selection of the finest indie/alternative/dance/rock/whatever in town. Doors open at Portsmouth's Liquid Envy at 2200 tomorrow night, Thursday 7th August, and entrance is £1 before 2230 (rising to £2 before 2300, £3 after, etc). The Wedgewood Rooms hosts the next two heats of its Showcase 08 competition over the next week. Heat nine takes place this Sunday, 10th August, and features The Tripods, The Elizans, HugeManFalls and The Ex-Patriots. Heat ten follows on Wednesday 13th August, when Joymask, The Levels, Goodbye Stereo and Chemical Sunset will be trying to win through to the next round. Each band has 25 minutes within which to impress both the audience and a panel of judges, entrance is £4 on the door.
Legendary club night Chaos is back at The Wedgewood Rooms this Saturday, 9th August, with DJ Lemon and Spikey Mark in the Main Room from 2200, whilst Will Chump and Ruby Soho take charge of the Chaos Lounge, in the Edge of The Wedge, from 2300. Doors open at 2200, entrance is £5.
This week Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club features guest performances from three local artists; Portsmouth-based electro-blues outfit Carbon Factory kick things off at 1930, acoustic duo Bemis follow at 2030 whilst southern punks The Asylum Seekers take over at 2130. The Open Mike session follows from 2230-0000. Doors open at The Barn at The Milton Arms at 1900 tomorrow, Thursday 7th August, admission is (as always) free and for more information why not check out the event's Facebook group.

The Southsea Mafia DJs are again are in charge of Waster this week, supplying the masses with a selection of the finest indie/alternative/dance/rock/whatever in town. Doors open at Portsmouth's Liquid Envy at 2200 tomorrow night, Thursday 7th August, and entrance is £1 before 2230 (rising to £2 before 2300, £3 after, etc). The Wedgewood Rooms hosts the next two heats of its Showcase 08 competition over the next week. Heat nine takes place this Sunday, 10th August, and features The Tripods, The Elizans, HugeManFalls and The Ex-Patriots. Heat ten follows on Wednesday 13th August, when Joymask, The Levels, Goodbye Stereo and Chemical Sunset will be trying to win through to the next round. Each band has 25 minutes within which to impress both the audience and a panel of judges, entrance is £4 on the door.
Legendary club night Chaos is back at The Wedgewood Rooms this Saturday, 9th August, with DJ Lemon and Spikey Mark in the Main Room from 2200, whilst Will Chump and Ruby Soho take charge of the Chaos Lounge, in the Edge of The Wedge, from 2300. Doors open at 2200, entrance is £5.
This week Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club features guest performances from three local artists; Portsmouth-based electro-blues outfit Carbon Factory kick things off at 1930, acoustic duo Bemis follow at 2030 whilst southern punks The Asylum Seekers take over at 2130. The Open Mike session follows from 2230-0000. Doors open at The Barn at The Milton Arms at 1900 tomorrow, Thursday 7th August, admission is (as always) free and for more information why not check out the event's Facebook group.
