Twisted Village - Second Wave / CANCELLED

UPDATE: 19/06 - Unfortunately, owing to poor ticket sales and the financial risk this has incurred, the organisers of the Twisted Village Festival have made the sad decision not to proceed with year's event. A full statement on the event's cancellation can be found on the festival's website and Facebook page.

UPDATE: 25/06 - The Portsmouth News is reporting that the festival's production company has gone into liquidation; the festival's website is still active, however its social media presence has been shuttered.

Following on from their initial line-up announcement the organisers of boutique festival Twisted Village have released details of more acts and artists performing at the inaugural event. Joining the already mouth-watering selection of acts, which include Alabama 3 and The Lovely Eggs, are bhangra drummers The Dhol Foundation, players of tiny instruments Babsie Brown and the Miniature Orchestra, the quite fantastically named Johnny Kowalski & The Sexy Weirdos, the funky brass of Tuba Libres and the excellent Fake Empire.

In addition to the live music on offer there'll also be sets on the decks from Brandon Block, the rebel dread himself Don Letts and the one and only DJ Format. Twisted Village also sees the welcome return of Portsmouth’s legendary Hipshaker DJs to the festival circuit, if you want a taste of what they'll bring to the party check out their Express FM radio show (past episodes of which are available online). On the performing arts side of things the Circo Rum Ba Ba troupe will bring some joyful anarchy to proceedings and, if it all gets too much, there's always a relaxing game or two of Drag Queen Bingo to look forward to.

With more acts, including headliners, yet to be announced all is looking very good indeed for Twisted Village. The festival takes place at Vicarage Farm, Woodmancott, from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th August, Early Bird tickets may have sold out but Tier 2 tickets (priced at £105) are available now from the festival website.

Twisted Village Festival - Initial Line-up announced / CANCELLED

UPDATE: 19/06 - Unfortunately, owing to poor ticket sales and the financial risk this has incurred, the organisers of the Twisted Village Festival have made the sad decision not to proceed with year's event. A full statement on the event's cancellation can be found on the festival's website and Facebook page

UPDATE: 25/06 - The Portsmouth News is reporting that the festival's production company has gone into liquidation; the festival's website is still active, however its social media presence has been shuttered.

The tiny hamlet of Woodmancott, nestled roughly midway between Winchester and Basingstoke, might seem an unlikely destination for a new festival to pitch up. Yet here, at Vicarage Farm, is where the Twisted Village Festival will pitch tents for its inaugural outing.

Billed as a "festival of performing arts, music and curiosities" Twisted Village promises to be a compact and bijou affair, hosting 4999 souls on-site (a number which also includes both crew and artists), offering the seasoned festival-goer something more than big stages, huge crowds and annoyingly long queues for the amenities. If you didn't get Glastonbury tickets, or find that walking a festival site the size of Coventry isn't your bag any more, then this might be just what you're looking for.

Personally I'm a fan of a smaller festival; as much fun as a large sprawling site is to explore there is always something (or several) that gets missed. Limiting the number of attendees should hopefully make for a more comfortable stroll around the site, stumbling across promised curiosities, helping to create the "village vibe" that the organisers are striving for.

The organisers have set out their ethos on the website, which includes their vision for a festival that includes dance, spoken word performance, theatre and street theatre as well as, obviously , music. The festival also boasts excellent environmental credentials, effecting a no plastic policy on the main site, asking festival-goers to bring reusable bottles to enjoy free refills at various water stations. If that wasn't enough the festival will also employ solar power & biodiesel-powered generators to lessen its carbon emissions.

So far so very right-on, but what's to see and enjoy at this shindig you may wonder. Well, the line-up announced so far includes Beans On Toast, LibraLibra, Yassassin, Alabama 3, Curl, Oh My God! It's The Church, Shoot The Duke, Megan Linford and the truly brilliant (and quite possibly worth the ticket price alone) joy that is The Lovely Eggs. With more acts TBA it's refreshing to note that the festival is also aiming to ensure female artists represent 50% of the final line-up (other, larger, festivals should take note).

Twisted Village Festival runs from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th August and Tier 1 (Early Bird) tickets are available now, priced at £90 for adults, via the festival website. Prices are scheduled to increase in Tier 2 (£105) and Tier 3 (£120), full pricing information and more can be found on the festival's FAQ page.

Winchestival 2019 - Initial Line-up announced

Winchester's festival-in-a-day Winchestival returns for a third outing this June, descending once again on the city's North Walls for 12 hours of music, food and fun. The organisers have this week released details of the initial line-up and, it's safe to say, there's something here for everyone at this family friendly festival.

The Gannon-Stoddard Family Singers (aka The Magic Numbers) headline the Main Stage, with Reading's Only The Poets, Southampton four-piece Submariner and the Isle of Wight's Lauran Hibberd also on the bill. Joining them are indie pop duo Deco and, opening proceedings, Osborne School's rock choir, Rubik's Cube, with further acts TBA.

BBC Introducing Solent host the second stage this year, with a line-up featuring Southampton acts Bash! and Mystic Peach, south coast Beach Punks Remainders, the utterly mesmerising Bruch and, from Swanage, Galaxy Thief. For those who like to get their groove on there's a Disco Tent although, for my money, the Auntie Beeb's line-up looks the one to watch.

Winchestival 2019 takes place on Saturday 15th June, with advance tickets available now via EventBrite priced at £25 for adults, £13 for ages 5-17 and those under 5 getting in for FREE!

Temples of Youth - 'Darker Places'

Sound the new music klaxon, Winchester's Temples of Youth have returned. Darker Places is just under three minutes of haunting vocals and melodic electronica, and the video is rather spiffing too...

...those are black oranges on his hands, yes? No? Whatever, this is a gorgeous tune (and if you like this why not check out their SoundCloud page for more musical delights).

Ghostpoet at The Railway & The Registry

Fresh from playing Bestival singer/producer Ghostpoet has embarked on a tour of the UK which takes in two stops on the South Coast this week. The Mercury Prize nominee will be playing Winchester's venerable venue The Railway on Wednesday, 5th October, with support coming from from Craig's Band and Brighton's Woo!Worths. Tickets are available, priced £8 in advance, from the venue or Entertainment24.

The following evening, Thursday 6th October, the action moves to Portsmouth for the headline slot of Churchgonewild at The Registry. Support comes courtesy of Breton and Sumo DJs Kry Wolf. Entrance for this gig is FREE (no, really, I'm not making it up), which is nice.

Much Ado About Nowt

You know there's something not quite right with the world when MPs discuss the weekend's X Factor result over arguably more important matters.

What was it Groucho Marx said about politics?

The line-up for next year's Shockwaves NME Awards Tour has been released. Friendly Fires, White Lies and Florence & The Machine will join current NME favourites Glasvegas on the 17 date tour, which pitches up at The Pyramids on Thursday 19th February 2009. Tickets for the tour went on exclusive sale from the NME website this morning (so let's cross our fingers that they're not all sold out already).

Owing to illness 60's rockers Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich have unfortunately had to cancel their scheduled gig at The Cellars at Eastney this Saturday, 15th November. Instead 60's covers band Eddie & The Earwigs will be gracing the stage, playing the hits of The Zombies, The Small Faces, The Move et al, with admission FREE! Punters requiring refunds for their Dave Dee tickets are advised to contact their point of purchase.

This week's Waster features the best electroindiepunkrockrave tunes around, courtesy of resident Southsea Mafia DJs Will Chump and Philip Harvey. Admission is via the Liquid entrance to Envy, from 2200 onwards, priced at £2.20 before 2300 (£3.20 after). More information can found on the event's Facebook page.

The Hong Kong Gardeners Club returns to Southsea's Café Havana this Friday, 14th November, for more eclectic beats from resident DJs Dave Saunders, Ursula Reynolds and Philip Harvey. Admission is £3 on the door, from 2000-0100.

Promoters Partners In Crime have organised an indie themed cruise around the Solent this weekend. Featuring live performances from Cut The Blue Wire and The Levels, plus DJ sets from Ruby Soho and DJ Lemon from the Southsea Mafia and [/glitch] and Abbie Eales from the Hong Kong Gardeners Club (split across the vessel's two bars), Rock The Boat will depart from the Spinnaker Tower dock at 2000 prompt (boarding commences at 1930) this Saturday, 15th November. Tickets are £12.50, available in advance from The Wedgewood Rooms Box Office (023 9286 3911), and more information can be found on Facebook.

Funkt-If-Ino joins High Society this Friday, 14th November, for their monthly residency at Gunwharf's TigerTiger. Alongside the Funkt-If-Ino will be DJ Redz and Dr Psycho from Twiceasnice and Luke Neville from Hed Kandi. Admission is £5 before 2230, £8 after, from 2100-0200.

Brighton-based alternative rockers The Vinyls and Portsmouth five piece The Last Distinguished Gentlemen (aka Apostle) are the guest artists at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club tomorrow, Thursday 13th November. The Barn at The Milton Arms will be open from 1900, with live music from 2020 followed by the open mike session from 2200-0000. Admission is FREE, and more information can be found via the Facebook group.

Well, ruffle my hair and call me Susan, that's me done for another week; today I was mostly listening to Kraftwerk, Leftfield and Afrika Bambaataa. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be climbing the European cheese mountain.

Our Kid

Despite fingers again being pointed following the release of their latest long player, it appears Noel and Liam have had enough of the many accusations of 'channelling' The Beatles levelled at them and took inspiration from other quarters.

I wouldn't have thought Sir Cliff of Richard was their bag, but the ardent fans of His Cliffness are accusing the Brothers Gallagher of ripping off the 1976 'classic' Devil Woman on new album track, The Turning.

I wonder if Sir Cliff is going to return the favour, he'd be guaranteed another Number One then...

*koff*

Moving swiftly on, here are the pick of the forthcoming local gigs listed in the back pages of this week's NME:

This week's Waster coincides with John Peel Day, the annual celebration of the late DJ's musical legacy, so fittingly features live sets from two hotly tipped local bands, The Daisy Riots and Fresh Legs. Add to this a selection of fine alternative tunes spun by the Southsea Mafia DJs and you've the makings of a fine Thursday night's entertainment. Admission is £2.20 before 2300, rising to £3.20 after; further more information, including how to add your name to the guest list, can be found on Facebook.

Southampton venue The Hobbit will be hosting a day of live music this Saturday, 11th October, in aid of the charity PKD, the only UK dedicated to aiding sufferers of polycystic renal disease. The event will feature live performances from Black Bart, The Lowis Lanes, The Boho Hobos, Kelley's Heroes, Kumiss, Shizamms Picbox and J Fashole-Luke & Nicola Ghiaci, with music from 1300 through to 0100. Admission is £2.

Chaos pitches up at The Wedgewood Rooms again this Saturday, 11th October, for more of the best alternative sounds in town. DJs Will Chump and Lemon will be manning the wheels of steel in the Main Room, with some slightly mellower beats (and Sega) on offer in the Chaos Lounge (aka the Edge of The Wedge). Admission is £5 on the door, with entry from 2200; the sounds go through to 0300, with last admission at 0100.

Winchester Live is a new, week long, festival to promote the city's music scene, running from Monday 13th through to Sunday 19th October. A series of gigs have been organised by promoters Placid Piranha and The Girls In Green Shoes, at a variety of venues across the city. Bands so far confirmed to be appearing include Die!Die!Die!, Art Brut and Youthmovies (who kick off the festival at the city University's Vault venue on Monday 13th October). Full information on who's playing and where is available on the festival MySpace
.

LinkThe Hong Kong Gardeners Club has upped-sticks and moved from the basement bar of The Jolly Sailor to the swanky sounding Seahorse Showbar (what was The Frog On The Front). The first night at the new venue will be this Friday, 10th October, and will feature DJ sets from Matt Seeney, Paige Gregson, Phil Harvey and Abbie Eales plus live music from You Love Her Coz She's Dead. The fun runs from 2000 through till 0230. Tickets are £4.50 but, owing to licensing restrictions tickets, can't be purchased on the door. Instead they're available on-line from WeGotTickets.

The Edge of The Wedge hosts the PompeyMusic website's awards ceremony this Sunday, 12th October. The event starts at 1500 and will feature DJ sets from Udy (Kiss My Bass, Waster) and Ruby Soho (Chaos) amongst others. Admission is FREE and there's still time to vote in the awards, you'll just need to register on the website.

Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club this week features a special performance by local singer-songwriter Aitch, who'll be on-stage at The Barn at The Milton Arms from 2000 till 2130 tomorrow, Thursday 9th October; the Open Mike session follows afterward till midnight. Doors open from 1900, admission is FREE.

And that's me done for another week; today I was mostly listening to Elbow (who were damn good at The Guildhall last night), The Mountain Goats and Doves (who have a new album in the pipeline, which is nice). Be sure to join me next week when I'll be double-checking my Lotto numbers again.

The Gigwatcher 01/10/2008

Holiday Mode

I suppose really I should write something pithy here about Dirty Pretty Things splitting up, or Paul "fab macca wacky thumbs aloft" McCartney releasing a dance record (no, really), but I'm all set to leave on a jet plane so can't really be bothered.

This week's Waster doubles as the after-party for the Showcase 08 competition, with the full force of the Southsea Mafia DJs in effect, armed with the best indiepunkelectrorock'n'rave in town. Portsmouth's Envy nightclub will be open for the usual shenanigans from 2200 tomorrow, Thursday 2nd October; owing to a PowerFM party in sister club Liquid entry will be via the Envy doors only. Admission is a mere £2.20 before 2300, rising to £3.20 after, and more information, including how to get yourself on the guest list, can be found on Facebook.

Southampton Indie label Sotones will be showcasing its roster with an all day shindig at The Hobbit this Saturday, 4th October. The line-up includes The Moulettes, Haunted Stereo, I See Sparks, Modernaire, Jackie Paper, Peter Lyons and Rob Skipper & the Musical Differences, with bands on-stage from 1400. The fun runs through till 0300, and entrance is FREE before 2200.

The Grand Final of The Wedgewood Rooms' Showcase 08 competition takes place tomorrow, Thursday 2nd September, and features Almeida, Melodramas, Rusty Sheriff & Friends, Holy Roller and Shegotsick. Good luck to all the bands taking part though, to re-use my lame Highlander reference of a few week's back, there can only be one winner. Doors open at 2000, admission is £5.

Funkt-If-Ino returns to The Wedgewood Rooms this Saturday, 4th October, for a night of classic funk, soul and disco courtesy of Boba Funk, Darth Fader, Chewbazza and Jabba (aka the Funkt-If-Ino All Stars). Doors open at 2200 with admission £5 before 2230, £6 after.

The Hobbit hosts a fund-raiser for Cancer Research this Sunday, 5th October, featuring live music from The Blue Stragglers, EverAfta, Indigo Sun and Still Frame. Bands start at 1800.

The Visitors, a six-piece folk-rock band, and Two Fingers Of Firewater, a five-piece roots combo, are the guest artists at this week's Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club. Doors open at The Barn at The Milton Arms at 1900 tomorrow, Thursday 2nd October, with guest performances starting at 2000; the Open Mike session follows at 2200. Admission is FREE!

And that's it for another week; today I was mostly listening to the Arctic Monkeys' back catalogue and The National's excellent long player, Alligator. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be .

The Gigwatcher 10/09/2008

And the winner is...

Three cheers and a rousing hurrah for Elbow, worthy winners of this year's Mercury Music Prize. For a while there, given the repeat listens I've given it over the past few weeks, I'd started to cross fingers that Neon Neon would walk away with it...

Umm.

Yeah, I bet on the wrong one again...

*koff*

And so to business; I purloined the following entertainments from the dark and musty back pages of this week's NME for your edification and delight:

Fans of Peckham indie kids The Metros are advised to check out club-night Connection at Scandal's tomorrow night, Thursday 11th September, as amongst the usual fine array of tunes will be a selection of the band's forthcoming new album (which, it must be said, the NME didn't like all that much) plus give-aways of Metros' merchandise to boot. Doors open from 2200 and entrance is £1 before 2330, £2.50 after. More information can be found on the Facebook event page.

The Wedgewood Rooms
hosts the play off of its Showcase 08 competition tomorrow, Thursday 11th September, when the highest scoring runners-up (or acts most deserving of a second chance) will be battling it out for a place in the final. This week Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club features performances from Portsmouth all-girl band Minds Gone Blank, Gosport's The Unknown Soldiers, 70's recording artist Roy Hill and local indie five-piece Pathway. Admission is FREE and you're advised to arrive early.

Southsea Fest 2008
takes over Albert Road for a whole day of musical delights this Saturday, 13th September, with 14 hours of live music spread across 8 of the venerable thoroughfare's finest establishments. Full information on who's playing where, and when, plus ticketing details are available from the event's website.

In addition to the aforementioned list of events along Albert Road this Saturday, 13th September, club-night Chaos returns to The Wedgewood Rooms for a festival special. The Main Room features DJs Hev Stilet-Hoe and Marky Marc, with Will Chump and Ruby Soho mellowing things out in The Chaos Lounge (aka The Edge of The Wedge). Doors open 2200 through to 0300, entrance is £5 on the door (last admission at 0100).

Power down the Flux Capacitor, that's it for another week; today I have mostly been listening to Elbow's Mercury Award-winning album and the mellifluous tones of Vampire Weekend. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be standing on the edge, looking over.
