The Gigwatcher 17/10/2007

It was the astroturf, honest.

Pete Doherty has admitted he can't remember missing all those gigs he didn't turn up for.

Honest.

No, I can't think why that might be either.

*koff*

Moving swiftly on, this week's NME features a free 15 track CD in support of the Love Music Hate Racism campaign; a further 14 tunes, making up a second CD, can be downloaded from the NME's website. Artists taking part include Biffy Clyro, Maxïmo Park, Noisettes, Billy Bragg, MIA, Lethal Bizzle, Bloc Party and Babyshambles. And if that wasn't enough,
here's are the gigs I found listed in the back pages of this week's issue:

The fourth of the very successful Portsmouth Showcase events takes place this Saturday, 20th October, at The Guildhall in Portsmouth. Confirmed to appear this time are The Racketeers, The Elements, The Way, The Model Village, Revolution 74 and Sam McCarthy from Gilkicker. Advance tickets are £9.

Oxjam, the month long musical fundraising effort by those awfully nice people at Oxfam, is drawing to a close. Wrapping things up locally are a special Club 12th Hour at The Alma Arms in Portsmouth on Friday 26th October, featuring music from Floors & Walls, Turncoat, City Safari and The B of the Bang, and a day-time event in Portsmouth's Victoria Park on Saturday 27th October (the line-up for which has yet to be announced). Before all that though this Sunday, 21st October, the Orange Rooms in Southampton will be hosting The Ring Master's Jam, featuring live music from Fleeing New York, Lebbex and The Organ Donors (as well as, so it says on their website, a Burlesque strip show. Lawks!).

Indie club night Waster will tonight include live music from SixNationState and The Elements, plus DJs from the 'Southsea Mafia' providing additional tunes for the masses at Envy in Portsmouth. Tickets are available on the door.

Gosport indie rockers Futuremine and Reading hip-hop artist 4Fingaz will be performing in the guest slots at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club tomorrow, Thursday 18th October. As per usual the stage will be open to all comers afterward to entertain the crowd (there's a two song limit). The doors of The Barn at The Milton Arms open at 1900, admission is FREE and you're advised to arrive early.

Put a fork in me, I'm done. Today I have mostly been listening to Bombshell by King Creosote and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's eponymous first album. Join me next week when I'll be practising my l33t skillz.
