The Gigwatcher 10/10/2007

Long time listener, first time caller.

The quirky chaps from Oxford have done it again; breaking the system from outside with a downloadable album the price of which depends on the conscience of the punter.

In principle it's an excellent idea. In practice I reckon most will pay nothing at first, only coming back with their hard-earned if they like what they've heard (if at all). But I'm cynical like that.

No, really I am.

Paul Young's tex-mex band, Los Pacaminos, have been forced to cancel their gig at The Brook this Saturday, 13th October, on doctor's orders. Punters are advised to stop crying in their chilli and contact their point of purchase for ticket refunds.

Prettyboy Promotions, who previously brought live indie entertainment to the masses at The Registry with The Thursday Thing, have a new evening on the go. Waster takes place every Wednesday night at Envy in Portsmouth; tonight sees live music from Floor+Walls plus a DJ set from XFM's Eddy Temple-Morris. Tickets are available on the door.

The Wedgewood Rooms will be pounding with electro beats this Saturday, 13th October, as the Sumo and Underyournose club nights take each other on. As well as DJ sets from Udy and Brett Lawrence there'll also be live performances from The Exits, Get Shakes and Kid Carpet. Tickets are £7 and should be available on the door.

London pop/rock band Storey and singer/guitarist Baz fill the guest slots at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club tomorrow, Thursday 11th October. Afterwards the stage will be thrown open to all comers, each of whom have a two song limit within which to entertain the crowd. The doors of The Barn at The Milton Arms open at 1900, admission is FREE and you're advised to arrive early.

And finally, tomorrow is John Peel Day 2007 and all manner of musical events are occurring up and down the country in celebration of the memory of John Robert Parker Ravenscroft; these include a guerilla gig in Southampton (somewhere near the University apparently) and the co-opting of the Oxjam gig at The Railway Inn in Winchester. More information is available on the BBC Radio 1 website.

Times up, pencils down, that's me done for another week. Today I have mostly been listening to Super Furry Animals and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, with a bit of Black Grape on the side. Join me next week when I'll be walking on the spot.
