The Gigwatcher 30/04/2008

It's Business Time.

I almost wish I'd pulled my finger out and got myself a ticket for Glastonbury this year, the sound of 177,000 people singing along to Shakin' Stevens could well be a life altering experience.

[thinks]

There's lovely.

*koff*

Portsmouth venue The Cellars hosts two packed sessions of live music this Sunday, 4th May. The afternoon session features live performances from The Bog Rolling Stones, County Line and Eddie & The Earwigs, with Mess-O-Boogie, Manti and The Evil Puppies taking over for the evening. Tickets for each session are £7 in advance, separate tickets are required for each session.

Out Of The Void has organised two Oxjam events at The Hobbit in Southampton; one this Bank Holiday weekend, the second the weekend of the late May Bank Holiday. The first event this Sunday, 4th May, features live performances from Skitanja, JayetAl, The Limes, Shit! Hot Llamas, Magnus Spectrum and My Name Is Billy plus DJ sets from Laptop Dancer, Killblinton, Emo Hunter and Jeremy Waxman. Entrance is free (there is a suggested donation of £2) doors 1300-0100.

The Dawn Chorus and WiLf? will be providing the live entertainment at Waster tonight, with DJs Lemon and Will Chump dropping the best indiepunkelectrorockdance onto the hot wheels of steel. Doors open at Liquid Envy in Portsmouth at 2200, entrance is £1 before 2230 (£2 before 2300, £3 after).

The Hobbit will be alive to the sound of music on Bank Holiday Monday with an all day mini-festival featuring Miles Hunt & Erica Nockalls, Stuart O'Connor, Buswell, Swedish indie outfit The Flaming Moes and rockers King Furnace. Entrance is FREE before 1400, £3 before 1800 (dropping, bizarrely, to £2 after). Last entry is 0100, though DJ Sparky will keep things lively right through until 0300.

Regular club night Funkt-If-Ino will be commandeering The Wedgewood Rooms again this Saturday, 3rd May, for more 'funksoulboogiediscohiphop' supplied by resident DJs Darth Fader, Jabba and 2nd Hand Dan. The famous Games Room will once more be in effect, so you take a break from the boogie to improve your KerPlunk score. Doors open at 2200, tickets are £5 in advance.

The Brass Soul Band and London-based pop-rock outfit Emma King & The Heartsets are the live guests at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club this week; the regular Open Mike session follows the guest slots at 2200. Admission is FREE, doors open at The Barn at The Milton Arms tomorrow, Thursday 1st May
, at 1900.

Put a fork in me, I'm done. This afternoon I have mostly been listening to the harmonica-fuelled beat-boxing of Son of Dave and the humorous stylings of quirky antipodeans Flight of The Conchords. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be trying not so say "it's business time" so much.

Oh yeah.

The free Castlefields Festival takes place this Saturday, 26th April. The event, organised by Portsmouth-based promoters The Oberon Project, is part of Oxfam's annual OXJAM campaign and features performances from the cream of local talent. So far confirmed to appear on the Main Stage are Wiservice, The Edible Stems, Passengers, Delphic Oracle and The Elements to name but a few, plus there'll also be Acoustic, Dance and Reggae tents offering entertainment throughout the afternoon. The festival, at Southsea's Castle Field (hence the name), starts at 1200, closes at 2000 and entrance is completely FREE. More information, including the full line-up and timings, can be found on the promoter's website.

In addition to hosting the Grand Final of the official Portsmouth Guitar Hero 2008 competition (the winner of which will walk away with a limited edition XBOX 360) tonight's Waster features an exclusive DJ set from Gallows front-man Frank Carter. All this and the best tunes from the resident Southsea Mafia DJs can be yours for only £1 (before 2300, £3), doors open at Liquid Envy in Portsmouth at 2200.

Club Jamaica returns to Southsea's Café Havana this Friday, 28th April. Legendary singer Dawn Penn (of 'No No No' fame) will be joining Conal Kennedy and the Club Jamaica DJs for an evening of smooth reggae. Doors 2000-0100, entrance is £8 on the door.

Isle of Wight Festival promoter John Giddings has organised a spin-off event on the island at Osborne House, Queen Victoria's one-time residence. Ex-Jam front-man Paul Weller headlines on Saturday 26th July, with Girls Aloud topping the bill the following evening. Tickets are on sale now.

The Hobbit will be hosting Southampton's 6th Environmental Rock event this Saturday, 26th April. In addition to a wide variety of stalls providing information, ideas and activities promoting environmental awareness there'll also be live music from Dlugokecki, The Horse, The Bluescreen of Death, Smilehurdle and Caroline's Capuchin. The event runs from 1200-2000 and entrance is FREE.

This week Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club is an OXJAM charity special, featuring guest performances from local duo Bemis, Bournemouth-based singer-songwriter Pete Christie and Dutch prog-rock outfit Kramer; the regular Open Mike session follows the guest slots at 2215. Doors open at The Barn at The Milton Arms at 1900 tomorrow, Thursday 23rd April. Admission is, as always, FREE!

And that's me done for another week; this afternoon, whilst suffering from the man-flu, I have mostly been listening to The Crimea, REM and The Maccabees. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be adding an extra chilli to the mix.

:o)

Indie club night Waster celebrates the first birthday of Portmouth's Liquid Envy this evening with an exclusive two hour DJ set by Leeroy Thornhill, late of The Prodigy. In addition the resident Southsea Mafia DJs will be supplying the masses assembled with the best indiepunkelectrodancerock in town. Doors open from 2200, with entrance only £1 before 2300 (£3 after) and selected drinks a bargain £1.55.

The Hobbit will be hosting another fund-raiser for Southampton's annual Access Festival this Saturday, 19th April, with performances from Oblongata, Karalta, Spitdust, Davey Jones and Alex Bowron. The fun starts at 2000 and admission is a mere £3 (£2 if you happen to be wearing a festival badge).

Albert Road will be alive to the sound of music this Saturday, 19th April, when the third Southsea Music Mini Festival takes place. Little Johnny Russell's will be hosting an acoustic afternoon of tunes, with The Fat Fox taking over for the evening's electric festivities. The early session at LJR's (1330-1930) will feature sets from Angela Morgan, Abi Lanigan, Kurt Cooder, B of The Bang, The Blind Flies and The Charlie Anguish Development Scheme. SixNationState, Doll & The Kicks and Joey Nightmare are confirmed for the late session (2000-0200) over the road, plus there'll be DJ sets from Proud 2 B A Robot, Mr Paul, Philip Harvey and Ladiez Di(e). The event is in aid of The Ellen MacArthur Trust, entrance to either venue is payable on the door.

As The Albert Tavern on South Parade Pier is currently undergoing a major refurbishment legendary indie club night Chaos will, for one week only, decamp to The Wedgewood Rooms for two rooms of the usual shenanigans. Will Chump, Hev Stilet-Hoe and Ruby Soho will be on the decks in the main room, with Daddy Alex catering for more metal and industrial tastes in room two. Doors open at 2200 and admission is £5; Chaos returns to the pier on Saturday 26th April, which is nice.

The Freerange Festival, which had already been cancelled once due to problems with the original site at Eastleigh's Stoneham Park, has unfortunately been called off again. The festival had moved to function rooms at St Mary's Stadium but, with limited time to reorganise, escalating costs, lower capacity and licensing changes affecting the event, the organisers decided to draw a line under this year's festival in the hopes of bouncing back with something bigger and better next year. Ticket refunds are available from point of purchase.

The guest artists at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club at The Milton Arms tomorrow, Thursday 17th April, are electro-acoustic outfit Mojito and powerpop duo Doubleback Alley. The regular Open Mike session follows the guest slots at 2200, doors open at 1900 and admission is FREE!

Put a fork in me, I'm done; this afternoon I was mostly listening to Radiohead, King Creosote and The Maccabees. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be perfecting my paper aeroplane skills.

The Gigwatcher 09/04/2008

Just say no.

Now I come to think about it, there is something of the Lenny Godber about Pete Doherty...

*koff*

Eyes down for a full house, here are the gigs what I did delicately purloin from the NME's back pages this week:

I'll update the somewhat neglected entity that is the SoMC Events Calendar with the above gigs as and when I get a spare half an hour (depending on how the annual reorganisation of my sock drawer goes, it may take longer than anticipated as I'm easily distracted). The Events Calendar is, as I may let slip on the odd occasion, a useful resource for the idle gig monkey, packed as it sometimes is with local gigs like these...

Tonight's Waster will, for one night only, be an ultraviolet powered extravaganza featuring UV cannons, paint and glo-sticks. Things will start to glow at Portsmouth's Liquid Envy from 2200, with entrance only £1 before 2300 (£3 after).

The Talking Heads will be hosting a local band showcase this Sunday, 13th April, though details of the line-up has yet to be released. Doors open at 1930 and entrance is £3, with all profits being donated to the
Hampshire Autistic Society and Southampton-based charity Scratch.

A final batch of tickets for the long sold out Isle of Wight Festival in June have been released via the website of festival sponsors BT. The 500 tickets are on sale for the original price of £130 (plus booking fee) and will be limited to four per customer. The line-up for the festival this year includes Kaiser Chiefs, Sex Pistols, The Police, N.E.R.D, KT Tunstall, The Enemy, The Zutons, Iggy & The Stooges, Starsailor, Delays, The Kooks, Kate Nash and The Wombats, all of whom will be performing on the main stage. In addition the festival this year will also boast a 'big top' tented stage, in which the likes of The Stranglers, The Duke Spirit, Sugababes, Feeder, New Young Pony Club, The Music, Curved Air and The Australian Pink Floyd will be found. And if you're still without a ticket don't worry; ITV2 will be broadcasting live from the festival this year.

The support acts for REM's Summer Tour, which includes a stop at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on Wednesday 27th August, have been announced. Editors and Guillemots will be providing the warm-up for the Atlanta legends, which makes a trip out to the backwoods of Hedge End more appealing I must confess. Tickets are still available from LiveNation, priced at £45 (plus booking fee).

Becky Jerams and Leigh Mary Stokes will be the guest artists at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club tomorrow, Thursday 10th April, with the regular Open Mike session following at 2200 through to 0000. Doors open at 1900 at The Barn at The Milton Arms and admission is, as always, FREE!

And that's me done for another week; this afternoon I have mostly been listening to Guillemots, Bat For Lashes and Arcade Fire. Nice. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be hypnotizing chickens.
