The free Castlefields Festival takes place this Saturday, 26th April. The event, organised by Portsmouth-based promoters The Oberon Project, is part of Oxfam's annual OXJAM campaign and features performances from the cream of local talent. So far confirmed to appear on the Main Stage are Wiservice, The Edible Stems, Passengers, Delphic Oracle and The Elements to name but a few, plus there'll also be Acoustic, Dance and Reggae tents offering entertainment throughout the afternoon. The festival, at Southsea's Castle Field (hence the name), starts at 1200, closes at 2000 and entrance is completely FREE. More information, including the full line-up and timings, can be found on the promoter's website.
In addition to hosting the Grand Final of the official Portsmouth Guitar Hero 2008 competition (the winner of which will walk away with a limited edition XBOX 360) tonight's Waster features an exclusive DJ set from Gallows front-man Frank Carter. All this and the best tunes from the resident Southsea Mafia DJs can be yours for only £1 (before 2300, £3), doors open at Liquid Envy in Portsmouth at 2200.
Club Jamaica returns to Southsea's Café Havana this Friday, 28th April. Legendary singer Dawn Penn (of 'No No No' fame) will be joining Conal Kennedy and the Club Jamaica DJs for an evening of smooth reggae. Doors 2000-0100, entrance is £8 on the door.
Isle of Wight Festival promoter John Giddings has organised a spin-off event on the island at Osborne House, Queen Victoria's one-time residence. Ex-Jam front-man Paul Weller headlines on Saturday 26th July, with Girls Aloud topping the bill the following evening. Tickets are on sale now.
The Hobbit will be hosting Southampton's 6th Environmental Rock event this Saturday, 26th April. In addition to a wide variety of stalls providing information, ideas and activities promoting environmental awareness there'll also be live music from Dlugokecki, The Horse, The Bluescreen of Death, Smilehurdle and Caroline's Capuchin. The event runs from 1200-2000 and entrance is FREE.
This week Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club is an OXJAM charity special, featuring guest performances from local duo Bemis, Bournemouth-based singer-songwriter Pete Christie and Dutch prog-rock outfit Kramer; the regular Open Mike session follows the guest slots at 2215. Doors open at The Barn at The Milton Arms at 1900 tomorrow, Thursday 23rd April. Admission is, as always, FREE!
And that's me done for another week; this afternoon, whilst suffering from the man-flu, I have mostly been listening to The Crimea, REM and The Maccabees. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be adding an extra chilli to the mix.
:o)
