The Gigwatcher 16/04/2008

Sacre bleu!

A French MP is so incensed by his country's entry for this year's Eurovision Song contest including English lyrics that he's calling for French TV to boycott the show.

Bless.

I wonder if that was before or after he'd heard it?

*koff*

Indie club night Waster celebrates the first birthday of Portmouth's Liquid Envy this evening with an exclusive two hour DJ set by Leeroy Thornhill, late of The Prodigy. In addition the resident Southsea Mafia DJs will be supplying the masses assembled with the best indiepunkelectrodancerock in town. Doors open from 2200, with entrance only £1 before 2300 (£3 after) and selected drinks a bargain £1.55.

The Hobbit will be hosting another fund-raiser for Southampton's annual Access Festival this Saturday, 19th April, with performances from Oblongata, Karalta, Spitdust, Davey Jones and Alex Bowron. The fun starts at 2000 and admission is a mere £3 (£2 if you happen to be wearing a festival badge).

Albert Road will be alive to the sound of music this Saturday, 19th April, when the third Southsea Music Mini Festival takes place. Little Johnny Russell's will be hosting an acoustic afternoon of tunes, with The Fat Fox taking over for the evening's electric festivities. The early session at LJR's (1330-1930) will feature sets from Angela Morgan, Abi Lanigan, Kurt Cooder, B of The Bang, The Blind Flies and The Charlie Anguish Development Scheme. SixNationState, Doll & The Kicks and Joey Nightmare are confirmed for the late session (2000-0200) over the road, plus there'll be DJ sets from Proud 2 B A Robot, Mr Paul, Philip Harvey and Ladiez Di(e). The event is in aid of The Ellen MacArthur Trust, entrance to either venue is payable on the door.

As The Albert Tavern on South Parade Pier is currently undergoing a major refurbishment legendary indie club night Chaos will, for one week only, decamp to The Wedgewood Rooms for two rooms of the usual shenanigans. Will Chump, Hev Stilet-Hoe and Ruby Soho will be on the decks in the main room, with Daddy Alex catering for more metal and industrial tastes in room two. Doors open at 2200 and admission is £5; Chaos returns to the pier on Saturday 26th April, which is nice.

The Freerange Festival, which had already been cancelled once due to problems with the original site at Eastleigh's Stoneham Park, has unfortunately been called off again. The festival had moved to function rooms at St Mary's Stadium but, with limited time to reorganise, escalating costs, lower capacity and licensing changes affecting the event, the organisers decided to draw a line under this year's festival in the hopes of bouncing back with something bigger and better next year. Ticket refunds are available from point of purchase.

The guest artists at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club at The Milton Arms tomorrow, Thursday 17th April, are electro-acoustic outfit Mojito and powerpop duo Doubleback Alley. The regular Open Mike session follows the guest slots at 2200, doors open at 1900 and admission is FREE!

Put a fork in me, I'm done; this afternoon I was mostly listening to Radiohead, King Creosote and The Maccabees. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be perfecting my paper aeroplane skills.
