The Gigwatcher 21/11/2007

Mind the oranges Marlon

Strange but true, BBC Radio Scotland are not playing any music today. Ex-KLF man Bill Drummond has talked them into joining his No Music Day campaign, replacing records with interviews and discussions for the day to show how important music is to their audience by taking it away.

Seems a wee bit heavy-handed to me, but that's the nanny state for you.

*koff*

Eyes down for a full house, here's what I found to tempt me in the back pages of this week's NME:

Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club at The Milton Arms tomorrow, Thursday 22nd November, features guest performances from local duo Paisley Pie and next big thing Different Day. Afterward the stage will be open to those with the cojones to take the microphone and entertain the crowd. Admission is FREE, the doors open at 1900 and the first band is on-stage at 1915.

The Exits and Hijera co-headline tonight's Waster indie night at Portsmouth's Envy nightclub, with additional entertainment before and after courtesy of the Southsea Mafia DJs. Doors open at 2200, with entrance a mere £1 before 2300 (£3 afterward).

Little London, Joe Black and Clone are all taking part in a burlesque-tinged benefit evening for Great Ormond Street Hospital this Sunday, 25th November, at Jongleurs in Portsmouth. Yes, it's an odd place for a gig I know but A) it's for charity, B) there'll be burlesque dancers and C) what else would you be doing on a Sunday night? Entrance is £4 on the door and the fun runs from 2000-0030.

And finally, the Ashcroft Arts Centre in Fareham will be hosting a screening of Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten, Julien Temple's documentary on the life and times of the much missed front man of The Clash, this Friday, 23rd November, at 1930. Tickets are a bargain £3.50.

That's me done, show me the door. This afternoon I have mostly been listening to the slick guitars of OKGo and the multi-layered production of the Electric Light Orchestra. Nice. Join me next week when I'll building models of famous buildings using nowt but processed cheese.
