The Gigwatcher 28/11/2007

It's too orangey for crows.

Y'know the more I think about it the more I'm convinced that there's a small monkey living in Amy Winehouse's beehive who controls all her thoughts and actions. His name is Gerald, and he's an angry little monkey indeed.

*koff*

If you've a hankering to share the tunes on your iPod to a wider audience than just your own ears then head to The Edge of The Wedge in Portsmouth this Saturday, 1st December, when the venue will be hosting a "What's On Your iPod?" evening. All you need to do is knock up a 15 minute (and no longer) playlist and turn up early enough to blag one of the slots (availability of which are limited). After that you can sit back and enjoy 15 minutes of aural fame. The event has been organised to mark World Aids Day, red ribbons will be available on the night and any donations made will go directly to the National AIDS Trust.

The chaps from Hot Chip will be spinning a DJ set to entertain the masses at Southampton's Orange Rooms this Friday, 30th November. Doors open at 2000, with entry a mere £2 on the door (£4 after 2200).

As well as featuring live music from Wyld Side (winners of The Wedgewood Rooms Showcase '07 competition) and OK Tokyo!, tonight's Waster also includes a Guitar Hero 3 competition. If that's not enough then the Southsea Mafia DJs will be doing their thing too. Envy in Portsmouth again hosts the fun, which runs from 2200 through to 0230. It's a paltry £1 entry before 2300, rising to a still reasonable £3 after.

Local Indie band Pathway and Glaswegian alternative rockers Boogi Loushou will be the musical guests at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club at The Milton Arms tomorrow, Thursday 29th November. The stage will be open to all budding performers afterward to try their hand entertaining the audience. Admission is FREE and the doors open at 1900.

And finally, the Sunday night headliners for next year's Isle of Wight Festival have been announced. In something of a coup for the organisers, The Police will be making their only UK festival appearance at Seaclose Park on June 15th 2008. Tickets for the festival go on general sale at 0900 on Monday 10th December.

That's it for another week; this morning I have mostly been listening to Fields and Guillemots, with a pinch of DJ Shadow inbetween. Join me next week when I'll building a house of cards the hard way (it involves mittens and lots of Red Bull).

The Gigwatcher 21/11/2007

Mind the oranges Marlon

Strange but true, BBC Radio Scotland are not playing any music today. Ex-KLF man Bill Drummond has talked them into joining his No Music Day campaign, replacing records with interviews and discussions for the day to show how important music is to their audience by taking it away.

Seems a wee bit heavy-handed to me, but that's the nanny state for you.

*koff*

Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club at The Milton Arms tomorrow, Thursday 22nd November, features guest performances from local duo Paisley Pie and next big thing Different Day. Afterward the stage will be open to those with the cojones to take the microphone and entertain the crowd. Admission is FREE, the doors open at 1900 and the first band is on-stage at 1915.

The Exits and Hijera co-headline tonight's Waster indie night at Portsmouth's Envy nightclub, with additional entertainment before and after courtesy of the Southsea Mafia DJs. Doors open at 2200, with entrance a mere £1 before 2300 (£3 afterward).

Little London, Joe Black and Clone are all taking part in a burlesque-tinged benefit evening for Great Ormond Street Hospital this Sunday, 25th November, at Jongleurs in Portsmouth. Yes, it's an odd place for a gig I know but A) it's for charity, B) there'll be burlesque dancers and C) what else would you be doing on a Sunday night? Entrance is £4 on the door and the fun runs from 2000-0030.

And finally, the Ashcroft Arts Centre in Fareham will be hosting a screening of Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten, Julien Temple's documentary on the life and times of the much missed front man of The Clash, this Friday, 23rd November, at 1930. Tickets are a bargain £3.50.

That's me done, show me the door. This afternoon I have mostly been listening to the slick guitars of OKGo and the multi-layered production of the Electric Light Orchestra. Nice. Join me next week when I'll building models of famous buildings using nowt but processed cheese.

Carnival of Souls

Pete Doherty, Amy Winehouse and Britney Spears.

Tutty Fruity Promotions have organised an evening of acoustic entertainment at The Alma Arms this Sunday, 18th November, to raise funds for the BBC's annual Children In Need appeal. So far confirmed to appear are October In Minnesota, Champ Of The Day, Dirty Sky Jones and Leigh Mary Stokes, with more acts are to be announced. There are a couple of slots available, acoustic acts wanting to take part should message Tutty Fruity on their MySpace. Entrance is £4 on the door, and there'll be a raffle as well.

The Pigeon Detectives gig at The Guildhall, Portsmouth, tonight might be sold out, but there's still a chance to rub shoulders with the band at the official after-show party. Little Johnny Russell's on Albert Road will be hosting the bash, which will feature DJ sets from the band and resident turntablist Red Indie.

The Edge of The Wedge is hosting 'Protect The Human', an evening for Amnesty International, tomorrow, Saturday 17th November. Mrs Kooper will be providing Bhangra and Asian vibes, plus a selection of music from around the globe, for your delectation and delight. Entrance costs a suggested donation of £3 on the door and, to support those detained at Guantanamo Bay, the organisers are encouraging those attending wear something orange.

The line-up for next year's Shockwaves NME Awards Tour has been released. The Cribs, The Ting Tings, Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong and Does It Offend You, Yeah? will be pitching up their stalls and showcasing their talents at The Pyramids, Portsmouth, on Thursday 21st February 2008. Tickets are available now from Seetickets.

And that about wraps it up for this week. Today I have mostly been listening to Jimmy Eat World's new album and the excellent collection of remixes that is the new Soulwax/2 ManyDJs compilation. The Gigwatcher returns to its usual Wednesday delivery next week, so join me next time when I'll be impersonating Lenin.

The Gigwatcher 07/11/2007

Grand Imperial Wibble

Prince has stamped his purple heels firmly on the ground and ordered his army of online fans to take down any photos of the artist formerly known as 'the artist formerly known as Prince' that they may have on their websites (album covers and lyrics are also included in his demands).

It's not, apparently, an attack on his fans. Rather it's all to do with the use of images out there on the world wide web.

So if you're one of the people who photoshopped yourself into his entourage you've only yourself to blame.

*koff*

Legendary indie club Chaos welcomes Gonzo main man Zane Lowe back to the South Parade Pier this Saturday, 10th November, for an evening of alternative musical delights. If something harder is more your bag of chips then fellow antipodeans Pendulum will be in the second room. Tickets are £14, available in advance from The Wedgewood Rooms.

Tonight's Waster features live music from local dub/ska outfit Wiservice and Dan Le Sac v's Scroobius Pip, with a DJ set from Portishead's chum Andy Smith. As usual the fun takes place at Envy in Portsmouth, from 2200 through to 0230. Entrance is a measly £1 before 2300, increasing to a still fairly ridiculous £3 afterward.

Indie-rock outfit At The Weakend and Portsmouth's Rossco are the musical guests at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club at The Milton Arms tomorrow, Thursday 8th November. After the guest bands the stage is open to all those with the chutzpah to seize the microphone. Admission is FREE and the doors open at 1900.

Psytrance club night Deltawave celebrates 10 years this Saturday, 10th November, with a two room extravaganza at The Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth. Room one features resident DJs Venus, Mike and Wak&Pip plus a set from Dick Trevor, whilst room two is taken over by BubbleDubble. Tickets are £8.

Put a fork in me, I'm done. Today I have mostly been listening to mash-ups (The Clash v's Gwen Stefani, etc) and a lot of Mark Ronson, so I'm fairly down with my bad self. Sho nuff. Next week's Gigwatcher will be delayed for a few days, so meet me here on FRIDAY when I'll be intimidating a walrus.
