The Gigwatcher 14/05/2008

Vida La Vida Loca.

According to Chris Martin, being signed to EMI is a bit like living in your Grandparent's house.

By this I'm assuming he means he and the rest of Coldplay are plied with lashings of cake, ginger beer & chocolate and are allowed to stay up well past their bed-time (and not that it smells of wee all the time).

*koff*

Quite. And here are the gigs purloined from the back end of this week's Pete Doherty-tastic NME:

I'll update the SoMC Events Calendar with the above gigs as and when I have the time; given that there's some event in London I'm attending this weekend (yes, I'm going to Wembley, and my legs have gone all trembly) my time will mostly be taken up with football, over-priced pies and (all being well) copious celebratory beverages. Alternatively, if the wheels fall off Arry's FA bandwagon, I'll be retiring to my room with a box set of Ingmar Bergman DVDs for a good long mope.

But I digress.

When it's not being left to its own devices the Events Calendar can prove a useful aid to the local gig monkey at a loose end, full as it would be of gigs like these (or at least it would be if I updated the damn thing):

Alex and The Ligers, The Staytogethers, The Cold Cold Hearts, Bruschetta Brothers, Huckleberry and I See Sparks will all be performing live at The Hobbit in Southampton this Saturday, 17th May, when the venue hosts the third fund-raising event for this years Access Festival. Doors open at 2000 and admission is £3 (£2 if you flash your festival badge).

Waster will be pounding to the finest indiepunkelectrorockdance in town, courtesy of the Southsea Mafia DJs this evening. Doors open at Liquid Envy in Portsmouth at 2200, entrance is £1 before 2230 (£2 before 2300, £3 after) and there's usually some beverage or other on offer.

This week Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club features performances from Croydon's Tim Eveleigh, local singer-songwriter Ade Cull and Isle of Wight folksters The Well Being. Doors open at The Barn at The Milton Arms at 1900 tomorrow, Thursday 15th May, with the first band onstage at 1915 prompt. The regular Open Mike slot follows the guest entertainment at 2215. Admission is, as usual, FREE!

Put a fork in me, I'm done. This afternoon I have been mostly listening to the foot-tappingly upbeat new Delays album and the long player from The Last Shadow Puppets (which is worth a listen if you ever wondered what Love, Scott Walker or Jacques Brel would've sounded like if they'd hailed from Sheffield). Be sure to join me next week when I'll be undertaking a mythical quest.

Possibly.
