The Gigwatcher 17/09/2008

Crunch Time

The 'UK Music Hall of Fame' appears to be the latest victim of the credit crunch; there was no funding available for new inductees last year, and with none in the pipeline for this year either, organiser Channel Four is pulling the plug.

Having endured the ceremony in previous years I'm not entirely convinced this is a bad thing; it was only a matter of time before someone voted Simply Red in.

*koff*

Moving swiftly on, the following gigs were teased lovingly from the back pages of this week's Oasis-orientated NME:

The gigs above may be added onto the SoMC Events Calendar at some point over the next few days, it depends on whether I finally settle down to watch the entire second series of Dexter and Heroes or not (I've been neglecting my couch potato skills to the point where my V+ box is starting to creak from all I've recorded). The Events Calendar is, as has been mentioned in previous installments, a useful place to look if you fancy some live music but are not sure what's on locally, and is full of lovely gigs. Southsea Mafia DJs Lemon, Marky Marc and Philip Harvey will be spinning the best alternative tunes in town at tomorrow's Waster. Doors open at Portsmouth's Envy nightclub from 2200 tomorrow, Thursday 18th September, with admission just £2.20 before 2300 (£3.20 after). Details of how to get on the guest-list are available from the event's Facebook page.

The Joiners' upstart sibling Unit 22 is returning, albeit at a different venue and with a snappier name. The newly re-christened UNIT has taken over M Club, near to the city's Jury's Hotel, and will be open from Wednesday through Saturday each week. More information, including details of the imminent launch night, can be found on the club's Facebook page (where else?).

Blues At The Fort will be celebrating its 10th birthday at Fort Purbrook this weekend with two nights of classic Rhythm and Blues. The line-up for Friday 19th September features The Animals & Friends (featuring the legendary Spencer Davies), Jeremiah Marques & The Blue Aces and Cryin' Out Loud. The following evening, Saturday 20th September, The King Earl Boogie Band head-line, supported by The Cadillac Kings and Earl Green & The Right Time. Tickets for Friday night are £24, Saturday tickets are priced at £20, and there's a discount for parties of 20 or more when booking. Doors open 1830, with music from 1900-2330.

To celebrate International Talk Like A Pirate Day, DJs Spikey Mark and Ruby Soho will be hosting a buccaneer-themed evening at The Deco in Portsmouth this Friday, 19th September. The venue will be selling grog (aka 'rum') for 99p (but only to those dressed as and talking like pirates). Yarr!

Croydon-based singer-songwriter Tim Eveleigh and local acoustic duo Southern Down are the guest artists at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club tomorrow, Thursday 18th September. The doors of the The Barn at The Milton Arms open at 1900, guest performances start at 2000 with the Open Mike session following from 2230. Admission is FREE!

And finally, as reported in The News yesterday, the inaugural Portsmouth & Southsea Music Festival has been cancelled due to poor ticket sales; refund information is available on the festival's website.

Boots off, feet up, that's me done for another week; today I was mostly listening to Tom McRae's latest release and the raucous debut by those young scamps, The Enemy. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be learning how to play the Peruvian Nose Flute.

:o)
