The Gigwatcher 24/09/2008

That Place Up The Road

Bundled with this week's NME was the Indie Map of Britain and Ireland, a repackaged edition of the Student Guide the magazine usually punts out at this time of the year. Whereas Portsmouth made it as a foot-note on Southampton's double-page entry last year, thanks to The Wedgewood Rooms if memory serves, Pompey doesn't get a mention this time around.

Not that I'm bitter.. but..

*koff*

Waster this week features live performances from local bands The Elements and Pathway, followed by the Southsea Mafia DJs through till 0230. The doors open of Portsmouth's Envy nightclub will be open from 2200 tomorrow, Thursday 27th September, with admission just £2.20 before 2300 (£3.20 after). Further information, including how to get on the guest list, can be found on the event's Facebook page.

Pure Acoustic, a showcase for local singer/songwriters, returns to Havant Arts Centre this Tuesday, 30th September. An engineer and PA will be available on the night, artists interested in performing should be at the venue by 1930 to arrange a slot with the promoter. Doors open at 2000 and admission is
£3 (£1.50 for performers).

Portmouth promoter Southsea DIY hosts its first all day event this Saturday, 28th September, at The Fawcett Inn. The line-up includes Kelly Kemp, Sam Russo, You Me and the Atom Bomb, Beat the Red Light, Attack! Vipers!, The Grizzley Ends and Crazy Arm, with bands on-stage from 1500 through to 2300. Admission is a suggested donation of £3.

The Wedgewood Rooms hosts the third semi-final of its Showcase 08 competition tomorrow, Thursday 25th September, with The Levels, The Elizans, In Darklight and Holy Roller battling it out for a slot in the final. Doors open at 2000, admission is £4.

Chaos returns to The Wedgewood Rooms this Saturday, 27th September, for another slice of indie-fuelled anarchy and alternative shenanigans. Will Chump and DJ Lemon will be over-seeing the Main Room, with Marky Marc and Hev Stilet-Hoe in the Chaos Lounge (aka The Edge of The Wedge). Doors open 2200 through to 0300, entrance is £5 on the door (last admission at 0100).

Following the success of last year's event, Love Albert Road Day returns to Southsea's finest thoroughfare this Sunday, 28th September, for seven fun-packed hours of FREE entertainment. The Wedgewood Rooms will be hosting one the event's three stages, with Autons, The White Coats and The Good Time Charlies performing. Next door, in The Edge of The Wedge, the chaps from Cool Banana will be doing their thing. Further along Albert Road, The Beatmakers will be bringing their brand of soul to The Fat Fox. Unfortunately Seasick Steve has had to cancel his appearance, though the organisers have a couple of surprise guest artists up their sleeves. The main event runs from 1000 to 1700, more information can be found on the event's Facebook page.

Kiss My Bass returns to Café Havana in Southsea this Saturday, 27th September, for more beats and bass. DJ Charge (Breakneck) and Phil Harvey (Waster/HKGC) are the guests on the decks this time, joining residents DJs Fotza, Eratik Behaviour and Udy. Doors open 2000 through 0100; admission is FREE before 2200, £2 after.

Portsmouth five-piece pop rock band KiZmiT and roots three-piece Thinker provide the guest performances at this week's Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club. Doors open at The Barn at The Milton Arms at 1900 tomorrow, Thursday 27th September, with guest performances starting at 2000; the Open Mike session follows at 2200. Admission is FREE!

And that's it for another week; today I was mostly listening to Glasvegas' debut album and The National's excellent long player, Boxer. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be packing for my holibobs.

The Gigwatcher 17/09/2008

Crunch Time

The 'UK Music Hall of Fame' appears to be the latest victim of the credit crunch; there was no funding available for new inductees last year, and with none in the pipeline for this year either, organiser Channel Four is pulling the plug.

Having endured the ceremony in previous years I'm not entirely convinced this is a bad thing; it was only a matter of time before someone voted Simply Red in.

*koff*

The gigs above may be added onto the SoMC Events Calendar at some point over the next few days, it depends on whether I finally settle down to watch the entire second series of Dexter and Heroes or not (I've been neglecting my couch potato skills to the point where my V+ box is starting to creak from all I've recorded). Southsea Mafia DJs Lemon, Marky Marc and Philip Harvey will be spinning the best alternative tunes in town at tomorrow's Waster. Doors open at Portsmouth's Envy nightclub from 2200 tomorrow, Thursday 18th September, with admission just £2.20 before 2300 (£3.20 after). Details of how to get on the guest-list are available from the event's Facebook page.

The Joiners' upstart sibling Unit 22 is returning, albeit at a different venue and with a snappier name. The newly re-christened UNIT has taken over M Club, near to the city's Jury's Hotel, and will be open from Wednesday through Saturday each week. More information, including details of the imminent launch night, can be found on the club's Facebook page (where else?).

Blues At The Fort will be celebrating its 10th birthday at Fort Purbrook this weekend with two nights of classic Rhythm and Blues. The line-up for Friday 19th September features The Animals & Friends (featuring the legendary Spencer Davies), Jeremiah Marques & The Blue Aces and Cryin' Out Loud. The following evening, Saturday 20th September, The King Earl Boogie Band head-line, supported by The Cadillac Kings and Earl Green & The Right Time. Tickets for Friday night are £24, Saturday tickets are priced at £20, and there's a discount for parties of 20 or more when booking. Doors open 1830, with music from 1900-2330.

To celebrate International Talk Like A Pirate Day, DJs Spikey Mark and Ruby Soho will be hosting a buccaneer-themed evening at The Deco in Portsmouth this Friday, 19th September. The venue will be selling grog (aka 'rum') for 99p (but only to those dressed as and talking like pirates). Yarr!

Croydon-based singer-songwriter Tim Eveleigh and local acoustic duo Southern Down are the guest artists at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club tomorrow, Thursday 18th September. The doors of the The Barn at The Milton Arms open at 1900, guest performances start at 2000 with the Open Mike session following from 2230. Admission is FREE!

And finally, as reported in The News yesterday, the inaugural Portsmouth & Southsea Music Festival has been cancelled due to poor ticket sales; refund information is available on the festival's website.

Boots off, feet up, that's me done for another week; today I was mostly listening to Tom McRae's latest release and the raucous debut by those young scamps, The Enemy. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be learning how to play the Peruvian Nose Flute.

The Gigwatcher 10/09/2008

And the winner is...

Three cheers and a rousing hurrah for Elbow, worthy winners of this year's Mercury Music Prize. For a while there, given the repeat listens I've given it over the past few weeks, I'd started to cross fingers that Neon Neon would walk away with it...

Umm.

Yeah, I bet on the wrong one again...

*koff*

This week's Waster features DJs Will chuMp and Lemon from the Southsea Mafia, who'll be providing the best indie/rock/dance/alternative tunes around in the fine surroundings of Portsmouth's Envy nightclub. Doors open at 2200 tomorrow, Thursday 11th September, with admission £2.20 before 2300, rising to £3.20 after. More information, including how to get on the guest-list, is available from the event's Facebook page.

The Swan
in Woolston will be hosting a day of music and comedy this Sunday, 13th September. The line-up features local rock bands Lynchpin and Superfly, comedian Matt Black (and his piano) plus a selection of tunes from Carly & Graham of Perfect Alibi, the South's leading Pink Floyd tribute band. The music starts at 1400, finishes at 2200, and admission is £2 on the door (all proceeds go to charity).

Fans of Peckham indie kids The Metros are advised to check out club-night Connection at Scandal's tomorrow night, Thursday 11th September, as amongst the usual fine array of tunes will be a selection of the band's forthcoming new album (which, it must be said, the NME didn't like all that much) plus give-aways of Metros' merchandise to boot. Doors open from 2200 and entrance is £1 before 2330, £2.50 after. More information can be found on the Facebook event page.

The Wedgewood Rooms
hosts the play off of its Showcase 08 competition tomorrow, Thursday 11th September, when the highest scoring runners-up (or acts most deserving of a second chance) will be battling it out for a place in the final. The line-up for the play off includes The Tripods, Not Good Enough For Tony, Goodbye Stereo and Rusty Sheriff & Friends, all of whom have the judges to impress and the audience to win over. Doors open at 2000, admission is £4.

This week Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club features performances from Portsmouth all-girl band Minds Gone Blank, Gosport's The Unknown Soldiers, 70's recording artist Roy Hill and local indie five-piece Pathway. Doors open at The Barn at The Milton Arms at 1900 tomorrow, Thursday 11th September, with the music starting at 1900 (the Open Mike session follows on after the guest artists at 2230). Admission is FREE and you're advised to arrive early.

Southsea Fest 2008
takes over Albert Road for a whole day of musical delights this Saturday, 13th September, with 14 hours of live music spread across 8 of the venerable thoroughfare's finest establishments. Amongst the entertainments on offer are an afternoon of acoustic performances in Porter's, sets from The Strange Death of Liberal England and Six Nation State at The Wedgewood Rooms, a DJ set from Dirty Pretty Things at Little Johnny Russell's, rock from White Knuckle Revolution and Alternative Car Park at the Southsea Liberal Club and selection of the best local bands at The One Eyed Dog and The Fat Fox. Full information on who's playing where, and when, plus ticketing details are available from the event's website.

In addition to the aforementioned list of events along Albert Road this Saturday, 13th September, club-night Chaos returns to The Wedgewood Rooms for a festival special. The Main Room features DJs Hev Stilet-Hoe and Marky Marc, with Will Chump and Ruby Soho mellowing things out in The Chaos Lounge (aka The Edge of The Wedge). Doors open 2200 through to 0300, entrance is £5 on the door (last admission at 0100).

Power down the Flux Capacitor, that's it for another week; today I have mostly been listening to Elbow's Mercury Award-winning album and the mellifluous tones of Vampire Weekend. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be standing on the edge, looking over.

The Gigwatcher 04/09/2008

Absolutely

I'm not sure if Virgin Radio's re-branding exercise will get me to tune in; not so much because it's a daft name, more so because I can't remember how to retune my clock radio away from PowerFM.

[tumbleweed]

Oh the shame of it... though in all honesty it's the only thing bad enough to get me out of bed in the morning.

*koff*

Moving swiftly on, I plucked the following forthcoming gigs from the gawdy back pages of this week's NME:

Little Man Tate @ The Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth - 23/09/2008
Friendly Fires and Tinchy Strider @ The Joiners, Southampton - 24/09/2008

Dark Captain Light Captain @ Ocean Rooms, Brighton - 29/11/2008

The above gigs will be thrust majestically onto the SoMC Events Calendar as and when I get the time (but, given my oft mentioned ability to be easily distracted by shiny pieces of foil and brightly coloured paper, I wouldn't put money on it). When updated the Events Calendar becomes a fine and dandy resource for the average gig monkey, full of gigs like these...

And finally, to all those heading over to the Island for this year's Bestival, have a darn good time (and yes, I really will get around to sorting a ticket next year, honest guv).

Turn off the gas, I'm cooked; today I have mostly been listening to the retro stylings of Neon Neon, Portico Quartet's Mercury Award nominated debut and Gotye's 2006 (but only just released in Blighty) sophomore release. Be sure to join me next week when I'll be pretending I'm a character in a Spaghetti Western.

:o)
