The Gigwatcher 22/08/2007

Sufferin' succotash!

Hard to believe but true, the Compact Disc is 25 years old this week.

Is it really a quarter of a century since a fresh-faced Kieran Prendiville spread strawberry jam on a new CD to demonstrate its near-indestructibility? It surely is. Tomorrow's World may not have lasted the distance but there are piles of CDs all over my house and my copy of Brothers In Arms won't die no matter what I smear on it.

*koff*

Moving swiftly on, here's what I found listed in the back pages of this week's NME:

Natasha Bedingfield's gig at The Guildhall in Southampton on Tuesday 25th September has been rescheduled to Wednesday 20th February 2008. Original tickets remain valid, punters requiring refunds should contact their point of purchase.

The sleepy hamlet of Arundel will be entertaining a variety of musical acts this weekend as the 30th Arundel Festival begins. Operatic soprano Natasha Marsh opens the proceedings on Friday 24th August, with eighties pop diva Alison Moyet headlining the following evening. The eighties theme continues on Sunday 26th August when the bass-slapping sounds of Level 42 will reverberate around the castle, and Girls Aloud take the stage on Bank Holiday Monday to wrap up the opening weekend. Full details are on the Events Calendar.

The seventh annual Southsea Folk and Roots Festival takes place this weekend with a variety of events being held across the borough. The majority of the gigs again take place in The Albert Tavern on South Parade Pier, with free concerts held in the afternoon and ticketed affairs in the evening (headliners for the evening gigs this year include Jackie Leven, Steve Gibbons, ColvinQuarmby and Memo Gonzalez). In addition to the gigs at the pier a variety of 'fringe' events are scheduled to take place, with The Florence Arms and The RMA Tavern both reprising their roles from last year. Full details are on the Events Calendar.

The next heat of Showcase '07 competition takes place at The Wedgewood Rooms tonight. The line-up for Heat Seven includes Days Of No Trust, Introduce Your Icon, Elide and Jenna's Revenge. The last heat of the first round is scheduled for next Tuesday, 28th August; Heat Eight features We're Still Waiting, Eat The Document, Blackfox and Godsend. Tickets for the Showcase events are a bargain £5.

The Grand Final of The Talking Heads' Battle Of The Bands competition takes place this Friday, 24th August. Breaker! Breaker!, Entirety, The Maddisons, Head To Head and The Fret all won through their heats to make it this far, all of them are in with the chance of winning the cash prize (if I'd known there was a cash prize I'd have thrown a band together!). Entrance is £5 on the door.

Those with Facebook may be interested to know that a new group has appeared on the burgeoning social networking site. Portsmouth Live Gigs promises to include details of up and coming events occurring in and around Portsea Island (and nicely complements the Wedgewood Rooms Appreciation group). If that doesn't float your boat then try Arsebook instead.

And that's me done for another week. This afternoon I have mostly been listening to the new releases from Richard Hawley and Editors, both of which are really rather good (and not at all disappointing, unlike Kate Nash's debut long player). Join me next week when I'll be fiddling about with the nobs on the cooker.

The Gigwatcher 15/08/2007

Step away from the Naga.

The past week has seen the passing of two musical mavericks; Tony Wilson and Lee Hazlewood. The former gave us Factory Records, Joy Division and paved the way for superclubs in the UK. The latter helped reinvent Nancy Sinatra as a pop icon and released one of my favourite albums ever.

[pause for quiet reflection]

And today is the 30th anniversary of when Elvis Presley went to the big farm in the sky.

[pause for deep-fried banana and peanut butter sandwich]

Mmm, hazlenuts.

If, like me, you weren't lucky enough to get tickets for the Foo Fighters' double secret festival warm-up gig in Brighton this Friday then fear not; you can enjoy Dave Grohl and chums from the comfort of your own home thanks to the nice people at Radio 1. The gig will be broadcast live from the Concorde2 from 1800. And yes, I know it's not quite the same as being there, but you could always invite some mates round and have a mini-mosh pit in your front room.

The Talking Heads' Battle Of The Bands competition continues apace, with the third heat taking place this evening. Tonight's penultimate round features The Rivers of Sound, The Maddisons, Long Shore Drift and The Ramblings. The fourth and final heat is tomorrow, Thursday 16th August, with Head To Head, Kids Can't Fly, Lights Alive, The Next Tuesdays and The Fret all trying to make it through to next week's semi-finals. Entrance is £5 on the door.

The sixth heat of The Wedgewood Rooms' Showcase '07 competition is scheduled for next Tuesday, 21st August, and the line-up includes The Elijah Project, The Accidents, Midnight Dance Party and City Safari. Entrance is a bargain £5, for which you get both entertainment and the opportunity to perfect your Simon Cowell impression alongside the real judges.

Put a fork in me, I'm done. This afternoon I have mostly been tinkering with Windows XP whilst listening to The Strange Death of Liberal England and Moi Caprice. Join me next week when I'll be impersonating a large cheese.

They peel them with their little knives.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Some sad sack techno geek has created a virus which, once activated, targets your MP3s and deletes them from your PC. Honestly, haven't these techie nerds got anything better to do than try to ruin my day?

*koff*

Guess not.

A limited number of tickets have been made available for the rescheduled Cherry Ghost gig at The Wedgewood Rooms on Monday 20th August, contact the venue's box office to snap them up. Last month's Hayseed Dixie gig at The Brook, which was unfortunately postponed, has been rescheduled for Friday 21st September. Tickets are available from WeGotTickets.

The Wedgewood Rooms is currently closed for a bit of a wash and brush-up. The venerable venue will re-open on Tuesday 14th August with Heat Five of the Showcase '07 competition (featuring The Cool Banana, Swampglow, Joe Black and Ecoli). The Box Office and The Edge of The Wedge remain open as usual.

Details of the NME Freshers Tour 2007 have been announced; the line-up for the eleven date tour, which pitches up at The Old Fire Station in Bournemouth on Sunday 7th October, includes The Satin Peaches, Operator Please and The Go! Team. Tickets are available from Seetickets.

Following their addition to the bill for Editors' October jaunt across Blighty, Danish indie rockers The Kissaway Trail have had to postpone their imminent headlining UK tour. Both bands will now be at The Guildhall in Portsmouth on Tuesday 2nd October. And it's sold out.

Southampton's Talking Heads kicks off its Battle Of The Bands competition this week. The first heat is tonight, with The Casual Nelsons, Rupture Farms, Breaker! Breaker! and The Six Barrels all gunning for the chance to win the big prize. Heat Two is tomorrow night and features The KingSkins, Disaster By Design, Entirety and The Radics. Entrance is £5 on the door (£4 in advance).

And that's me done for another week; this afternoon I have mostly been chooglin' along to Kings of Leon and tapping my feet to The Kissaway Trail. Join me next week when I'll be pickling onions the hard way.

Lethal Bizzle's gig at The Joiners on Thursday 16th August has been cancelled, punters are advised to contact their point of purchase for ticket refunds. Monday night's Cherry Ghost gig at The Wedgewood Rooms was cancelled due to illness, the gig has been rescheduled to Monday 20th August. Those lucky enough to have tickets for this SOLD OUT gig but who can't make the new date should contact the venue by Monday 13th August for refunds (those without tickets are advised to contact the Box Office for returns).

The cream of Portsmouth's music scene don their shorts and boots this Saturday, 4th August, for the inaugural Rocker Soccer 5-a-side Tournament. Amongst the bands taking part are Blue Sky Research, The Ridgeway, The Stations, The Deads and Emptifish, all of whom will be joining the crew from Little Johnny Russell's, the organisers of the event. The tournament, which will raise money for Cancer Research UK, will be held at Roko in Hilsea, and the fun kicks off at midday.

Belle and Sebastian's Richard Colburn will be showing off his DJing skills at Little Johnny Russell's in Portsmouth tomorrow, Thursday 3rd August. Entrance is £3 and, along with the demonstration of indie turntable technique, there'll also be live music from Dirty 38's and The Stations to keep you entertained.

The Wickham Festival returns for its second year this weekend, bringing four days of music and entertainment to the village. This year the festival has moved to a dedicated green field site, with a 3000 capacity big-top tent hosting the entertainment (and keeping the punters dry should it rain). Legendary 70's folk-rockers Jethro Tull get things going tomorrow night, Thursday 2nd August, then The Hamsters and Maggie Bell bring the Blues to Wickham on Friday evening. Eddi Reader, Kathryn Tickell and Luka Bloom are on Saturday's bill, which is headlined by Runrig's Donnie Munro. The festival wraps up on Sunday with performances from Dean Friedman, Hazel O'Connor, Eliza Carthy and The Men They Couldn't Hang (who should get the crowd going nicely before Galway's The Saw Doctors bring the festival to a close). Both day and weekend tickets are available from the festival website.

Heat Four of The Wedgewood Rooms' Showcase 07 competition takes place tomorrow, Thursday 2nd August, and will feature performances from Wyldsyde, Absent Jack, Hellcyon and Life With Max (each of which will be trying to persuade both the judges and the audience into giving them more votes than the rest). Tickets for the Showcase events are a bargain £5.

And that about wraps it up for another week; this afternoon I have mostly been listening to The Railway Children and feeling nostalgic. Join me next week when I'll be hunting down the Great Prophet Zarquon and giving him a good telling off.

Save the cheerleader, save the world.

Not content with being the first act since Wet Wet Wet to score more than nine weeks at the number one spot, Rihanna is cashing in on the wet weather by releasing her own line of designer umbrellas.

*koff*

And yes, I thought it was a big gag when I first heard of it too. Words fail me. Moving swiftly on, here's what I found listed in the back pages of this week's NME:

If I'm not playing catch-up on all the TV I've recorded, but have been to busy watch (there's three episodes of Dexter at least), I'll update the SoMC Events Calendar just as soon as I can. The Events Calendar is, as I may have remarked previously, just packed with local gigs for local people, like these...

Dean Friedman @ The Cellars at Eastney, Portsmouth - 25/07/2007

Southampton band Timshel will be at The Wedgewood Rooms on Saturday 28th July to celebrate the release of their new albums (plural, they're releasing two). Also on the bill are Skyline Heroes, Ninja Biscuits and the mighty Brannigan's Law (featuring the SoMC's own Axe-Meister General, Ant Shue). Tickets are available now, a bargain at £5.00.

Today's NME includes details of this year's Rock'n'Roll Riot Tour, which pitches up at Southampton Guildhall on Monday 15th October. The line-up this year includes Lethal Bizzle, The Wombats and, Paul Potts' best mates, The Enemy. Tickets are available now, via the NME, from Seetickets.

The next heat of The Wedgewood Rooms' Showcase 07 competition takes place this evening. Heat Three, which is made up of Psyracuse Pyramid, The Model Village, The MBT and First Night Nerves, takes place on Tuesday 31st July. Tickets for the Showcase events are a bargain £5.00.

Indie night Club 12th Hour pitches up in The Raglan Rooms at The Alma Arms this Friday, 27th July, for another evening of fun and frolics. On the bill this time are The Waysters, The Cartel and Multicoloured Green. Entrance costs a mere £5, doors from 2000 till late.

And finally, as I may have mentioned once or twice previously, I can think of no better way of wrapping up a Saturday night in Portsmouth than staggering into Scandal's; it's my favourite hole in the ground and I've been going there for longer than I care to remember. Some emails last week got me thinking about classic Scandal's floorfillers, with a view to knocking up a Best of Scandal's CD, so I started a thread on the forum to canvas ideas. If you can think of any more, do that 'post a response' thing.

And that's it for another week; this afternoon I have mostly been listening to Kate Bush and David Devant & His Spirit Wife (who should've been huge, but there you go). Join me next week when I'll be leaping tall buildings with a single bound.

There's nothing like a bit of rain to make people want to buy songs about umbrellas. But honestly, nine weeks at number one? That's just a tad excessive.

Or is that exces-cess-cessi-ive-ive-ive?

*koff*

I'll get me coat.

Moving swiftly on, here's what I found listed in the back pages of this week's (redesigned, so yes it's smaller) NME:

As I'm being more of a gigwhore than usual this week I'll probably not have time to update the SoMC Events Calendar with the above gigs until Sunday afternoon. As has been inferred before, the Events Calendar is lovingly packed with lots of super smashing gigs to whet your appetite, like these:

Easy Star All-Stars @ The Talking Heads, Southampton - 18/07/2007

Two Gallants @ The Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth - 12/11/2007

The Wedgewood Rooms' Showcase 07 competition kicks off tomorrow night, Thursday 19th 2007, with four local bands taking the stage. Making up the first heat are The 47's, Avondale 45, The White Coats and, making their live debut, Yop Radio Saga. Each band will play a 25 minute set, after which both the audience and a panel of judges get to cast their votes on what they've heard. Tickets for the Showcase events are a bargain £5.00.

Bands from five european nations will be descending on The Wedgewood Rooms on Monday 23rd July to show that the International Language of Rock knows no borders. Joining Portsmouth's own Leptany will be Mal'damak (France), Wozu (Lithuania), Cloudcuckooland (Netherlands) and, from Duisburg in Germany, Neurotic Underground. Tickets are a ridiculous £4.00. H'mm, I wonder what the Lithuanian for 'mosh' is?

The second Tin Hut Music Festival takes place this Saturday 21st July, once again in the village of Stroud (near Petersfield). As mentioned here previously, the festival is a fund-raiser for the Stroud Village Hall Project (which is attempting to raise enough funds to replace the 'tin hut' the village has currently with something sturdier). Amongst those on the bill this year are Brian Houston, Hardly Heroes, Suburbian and One Weird Fish. Tickets for the day long event are £10.00 in advance (£12.50 on the day) and, to add to the festival feel, on-site camping is available this year as well.

And finally. When my chum Chris isn't hanging out the side of a helicopter he can be found indulging his obsession for cover versions. He takes a well known tune, finds six to ten covers of said song, then edits them seamlessly together in Garage Band. He then appears in the pub with the tunes on his iPod, teasing us to guess who sang which part of the song. You can now share in the often infuriating quest to figure out the artists involved as he's posted the first three of his mixes on his website, which this link to the forum will point you to.

Put a fork in me, I'm done. This afternoon I have mostly been listening to the excellent Delays and the very wonderful Feist (who was awesome at the Wedge last night, just about the loveliest gig I've been to in ages). Join me next week when I'll be unleashing my army of flying monkeys on to an unsuspecting public, mwah-ha-ha!

Pure Reason Revolution - Deus Ex Machina (live)

This interesting snippet of footage was filmed at the TS Wisla Hala in Krakow, Poland, during Reading prog-rockers Pure Reason Revolution's recent European jaunt supporting Porcupine Tree. This new tune, posted on YouTube with the band's consent, shows them going in a more 'industrial' direction.

To be honest, given the year the band has had, it's good to see them enjoying themselves (when I last saw them live they didn't have the best of evenings). This track is a good sign that the new album, which they're currently recording, is shaping up nicely. Excellent.

Brannigan's Law v's Timshel

The SoMC's resident guitar-meister, Ant Shue, has informed me that the mighty Brannigan's Law are to grace the stage of The Wedgewood Rooms with their presence.

The Law have been added to the bill for Timshel's double album launch gig there on Saturday 28th July; not content with releasing one long player, the Southampton based band are releasing two CDs, Burnt Fingers and Keeping Me Home, for the public's aural pleasure.

Also on the bill are Ninja Biscuits, Guildford's The Savage Jazz and Skyline Heroes from the Isle of Wight. Tickets are a bargain £5.00 and are available from the venue or direct from the bands.

Let's save the Polar Bears!

OK Live Earth, I'll make a deal with you; I'll keep buying the energy saving light-bulbs if you promise to keep James Blunt locked up.

*koff*

Tonight's gig by Trafficker at The Cellars at Eastney has been cancelled, please contact the venue for further information. The Hayseed Dixie gig at The Brook, scheduled for Monday 23rd July, has been postponed. Again, contact the venue for further information.

The week-long Bishop's Waltham Festival combines music, drama and history in the delightful surroundings of Bishop's Waltham Palace. The musical events this year touch rock, folk and jazz; Merseybeat stalwarts The Swinging Blue Jeans take the stage tomorrow, Thursday 12th July, with Terry Lightfoot bringing the festival to a close with his flavour of jazz on Sunday 15th July. Saturday 14th July is given over entirely to folk; Julie Felix, Rachel Unthank, Chien Bizarre and Les Barker are all on a bill that's nicely topped by Oysterband. If a whole day of folk is too much for you then 'evening only' tickets are available.

Continuing the festival theme, this year's Guilfest kicks off in Stoke Park, Guildford, this Friday. This alternative festival has grown considerably over the years and now boasts six stages, an acoustic lounge and both comedy and theatre tents. Supergrass and The Ordinary Boys top the line-up on Friday 13th July (The Hold Steady will also be appearing). Saturday 14th July features Sandi Thom, Captain and Morcheeba with Squeeze topping the bill. The festival comes to a close on Sunday 15th July with appearances from The Beat, The Icicle Works, The Magic Numbers and, finally, Madness. Both Day and Weekend tickets are still available (which is nice).

And that just about wraps it up for this week. This afternoon I have mostly been listening to Arcade Fire (I missed the carnage on Jonathan Ross) and The Chemical Brothers (mixing it quick). Join me next week when I'll be trying not to rub my eyes with chilli stained fingers. Ouch.

The Gigwatcher 04/07/2007

Now back to Gene Krupa's syncopated style.

So like 500 million or so other people on the globe I sat and watched the Concert for Diana on Sunday, marvelling at the scale of the new Wembley, impressed by the organisational skills of the two princes and more than a little bemused by the terrible links provided by Jamie Theakston and Claudia Winkleman (though they didn't look nearly as lost and confused as Dennis Hopper).

Admittedly it was never going to provide the spectacle of Live 8, with only the tease of a possible full Take That reunion to keep us glued to our seats, but it was entertaining nonetheless. Of course, in an alternative reality Diana may well have been a fan of Motorhead or Metallica.

H'mm.

Well, if it would've stopped P Diddy turning up that's no bad thing.

This weekend sees the return of the Summer Pops to the grounds of the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, running from Friday 6th to Sunday 8th July. The Australian Pink Floyd headline this Friday, with Girls Aloud entertaining the masses the following evening. Jools Holland's Rhythm & Blues Orchestra will be joined by Lulu to bring the event to a close on Sunday night.

There's still no word on a possible new owner for The Brook, but news has reached that one gig there (which I was particularly looking forward) that was cancelled has been rescheduled, albeit at a different venue. The planned Easy Star All-Stars gig will now take at The Talking Heads (about 5 minutes walk from The Brook); the date remains the same as before, Wednesday 18th July.

Following from last year's event The Wedgewood Rooms is again hosting a benefit evening for the Piam Brown Paediatric Oncology Centre at Southampton General Hospital. As before the line-up is made up of local acts; Portsmouth's Hobos & Eskimos and Cut The Blue Wire are scheduled to appear, Chichester's Joey Nightmare top the bill. The event takes place on Monday 16th July, tickets are £5 each.

And that just about wraps it up for this week. This afternoon I have mostly been listening to Black Grape and The Wannadies. Join me next week when I'll be proving that my kung fu is stronger than your kung fu.

Tom Jones - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor

Sir Tom of Jones, covering the Arctic Monkeys breakthrough tune, from the Concert for Diana at the weekend:

OK, so it might not be everyone's bag of chips (a couple of Monkeys' purists I know loathe it) but I like it. It's got soul, more than the comparatively bland Sugababes' take on the song that's for sure, and that's not a bad thing.
