Bournemouth's Opera House will be bouncing along to some fine Northern Soul tomorrow night, Saturday 1st November, when it hosts another of its popular SOS all-nighters. Resident DJ Chilli will be joined by Neil Jones and Dolly from the 100 Club, Mark Anderson of the Soul Smugglers and incrowd's Steve Lyons. Tickets are £10 in advance, doors open 2000 and the event runs through till 0400.
iLLuMIDanCe launches its new hard trance night this evening, Friday 31st October, with a 'Hard Halloween' event at the Venus Vodka Bar. Featuring sets from DJs Philosipha, Duane, Nathan D & Landslide and Sicknote, the music runs from 2100 through to 0200. Admission is £1 on the door, and ID is required.
Funkt-If-Ino will be firing up the disco pumpkins at The Wedgewood Rooms tomorrow, Saturday, 1st November, for its 12th Birthday Halloween Special. Darth Fader, Boba Funk and Chewbazza of the Funkt-If-Ino All Stars will be unleashing some fearful funk, spooky soul and the odd bit of haunted disco. Doors open at 2200, admission is £5.
Portsmouth's legendary indie club-night, Chaos, returns to its spiritual home this evening, Friday 31st October, for its annual Halloween blow-out. DJs Will Chump and Marcy Mark will pumpkin-ing out the stereo (sorry) at South Parade Pier from 2200 through till 0300, I don't know if they'll be bobbing for apples as well but anything is possible. Tickets are priced at £6 and are available in advance from The Wedgewood Rooms.
Local band showcase L.I.V.E. returns to Portsmouth's Tiger Tiger this Sunday, 2nd November, for an evening of live music. The line-up this month features Crossfire, The Last Distinguished Gentlemen and the most excellent Kodiak Jack. Doors open at 2000, admission is £6 on the door.

Owing to a surfeit of Guinness, a jolly spiffing performance by Glenn Tilbrook & The Fluffers, and the prospect of getting up at silly o'clock tomorrow morning, this week's Gigwatcher will be delayed by [plucks random figure out of thin air] 24 hours or so.
The regular dollop of local gigs and random mutterings should land gently in the inboxes of email subscribers tomorrow (Thursday) evening some time, appearing here on the blog shortly afterwards. All being well usual 'Wednesday service' will be resumed next week.

After 14 years, several line-up changes, lots of speculation and somewhere in the region of $13 Million, the "long awaited" new album from Guns N Roses is scheduled for release next month (the 24th of November to be precise). Whether this means the good people at Dr Pepper will make good on their promise to give a free can of fizzy pop to every US citizen is so far unconfirmed.
Yup, I reckon they're going to wuss out on that one...

Owing to illness, legendary denim rockers Status Quo have unfortunately had to postpone their planned visit to Portsmouth's Guildhall this Sunday, 26th October. The gig has been rescheduled for Saturday 14th February 2009; original tickets are valid, refunds can be obtained from point of purchase.
In addition to live music from local bands Venice Ahoy and Joey Nightmare, plus classic tunes from Will Chump and Phil Harvey of the Southsea Mafia DJs, Waster this week features a DJ set from Avenge and Lusille of the Suicide Girls. The doors of Portsmouth's Envy nightclub will be open from 2200, with admission just £2.20 before 2300 (£3.20 after). Further information, including how to get in for £1, can be found on Facebook.
The Wedgewood Rooms hosts Chaos, Portsmouth's premiere indie club night, this Saturday, 25th October. DJs Will Chump and Ruby Soho will be ruling the decks in the Main Room, with DJ Marky Marc offering some alternative tunes in the Chaos Lounge. Admission is £5 on the door, with entry from 2200; the sounds go through to 0300, with last admission at 0100.
Kiss My Bass returns to Southsea's Café Havana this Saturday, 25th October, for another raucous evening of beats, breaks and electro. Paul Hamilton (Something's Missing/Ricochet) and 8 Bit Bitch (Sumo/Hong Kong Gardener's Club) are the guest DJs this month, joining KMB residents Udy, Aimz, Eratik Behaviour and Fotza. The event runs from 2000-0100, with FREE entrance before 2200 (£2 after). A selection of mixes, from both resident and guest DJs, can be downloaded from the KMB website.
Singer-songwriter Flis Pitman and indie popsters Brassneck are the guest artists at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club tomorrow, Thursday 23rd October. The doors of The Barn at The Milton Arms open at 1900, with music from 2000; the Open Mike session follows the guests, from 2200 through to midnight. Admission is FREE and further details more information can be found on the Facebook group page.

Owing to illness, legendary denim rockers Status Quo have unfortunately had to postpone their planned visit to Portsmouth's Guildhall this Sunday, 26th October. The gig has been rescheduled for Saturday 14th February 2009; original tickets are valid, refunds can be obtained from point of purchase.
In addition to live music from local bands Venice Ahoy and Joey Nightmare, plus classic tunes from Will Chump and Phil Harvey of the Southsea Mafia DJs, Waster this week features a DJ set from Avenge and Lusille of the Suicide Girls. The doors of Portsmouth's Envy nightclub will be open from 2200, with admission just £2.20 before 2300 (£3.20 after). Further information, including how to get in for £1, can be found on Facebook.
The Wedgewood Rooms hosts Chaos, Portsmouth's premiere indie club night, this Saturday, 25th October. DJs Will Chump and Ruby Soho will be ruling the decks in the Main Room, with DJ Marky Marc offering some alternative tunes in the Chaos Lounge. Admission is £5 on the door, with entry from 2200; the sounds go through to 0300, with last admission at 0100.
Kiss My Bass returns to Southsea's Café Havana this Saturday, 25th October, for another raucous evening of beats, breaks and electro. Paul Hamilton (Something's Missing/Ricochet) and 8 Bit Bitch (Sumo/Hong Kong Gardener's Club) are the guest DJs this month, joining KMB residents Udy, Aimz, Eratik Behaviour and Fotza. The event runs from 2000-0100, with FREE entrance before 2200 (£2 after). A selection of mixes, from both resident and guest DJs, can be downloaded from the KMB website.
Singer-songwriter Flis Pitman and indie popsters Brassneck are the guest artists at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club tomorrow, Thursday 23rd October. The doors of The Barn at The Milton Arms open at 1900, with music from 2000; the Open Mike session follows the guests, from 2200 through to midnight. Admission is FREE and further details more information can be found on the Facebook group page.

Promoters Unit 6 have organised an Indie-toberfest at Southampton venue The Hobbit this Saturday, 18th October. Thus far confirmed as appearing are Coast, The Bizets, Alex Kriche, Recreation, The Docks and Happy As Larry. Doors open from 1700.
Little Johnny Russells on Albert Road has teamed with club-night Sumo for a party with a multi-coloured flavour tomorrow night, Thursday 16th October. The event, one of many across the country organised for Amnesty's Protect The Human week, will feature the Sumo DJs plus some special guests. It also has a fancy dress theme, with all planning to attend asked to wear the brightest clothes in their wardrobe. From 2000, donations on the door.
Southampton-based recording studios Shelter Studios showcase more of the best local talent at The Joiners tomorrow night, Thursday 16th October. Unfortunately I've no details of the line-up, but doors open at 1930 and admissions is £6 on the door.
Hipshaker returns to The Wedgewood Rooms this Saturday, 18th October. Packed with more classic 60s soul and R&B than you can shake a funky stick at, courtesy of the resident DJs, there'll also be live music on stage from ska/reggae band Django. Doors open at 2130 and tickets are £5.
The recently peripatetic Hong Kong Gardeners Club has finally found a permanent new home at Southsea's Café Havana, and will be open for business this Friday, 17th October with live music from Showcase 08 winners Melodramas and Canadian indie popsters Coast. Waster this week features live music from local indie funksters Kill Kasper plus the best alternative tunes in town spun by the Southsea Mafia DJs. Admission is £2.20 before 2300, rising to £3.20 after; further details, including how to get in even cheaper, can be found on Facebook.
Promoters Unit 6 have organised an Indie-toberfest at Southampton venue The Hobbit this Saturday, 18th October. Thus far confirmed as appearing are Coast, The Bizets, Alex Kriche, Recreation, The Docks and Happy As Larry. Doors open from 1700.
Little Johnny Russells on Albert Road has teamed with club-night Sumo for a party with a multi-coloured flavour tomorrow night, Thursday 16th October. The event, one of many across the country organised for Amnesty's Protect The Human week, will feature the Sumo DJs plus some special guests. It also has a fancy dress theme, with all planning to attend asked to wear the brightest clothes in their wardrobe. From 2000, donations on the door.
Southampton-based recording studios Shelter Studios showcase more of the best local talent at The Joiners tomorrow night, Thursday 16th October. Unfortunately I've no details of the line-up, but doors open at 1930 and admissions is £6 on the door.
Hipshaker returns to The Wedgewood Rooms this Saturday, 18th October. Packed with more classic 60s soul and R&B than you can shake a funky stick at, courtesy of the resident DJs, there'll also be live music on stage from ska/reggae band Django. Doors open at 2130 and tickets are £5.
The recently peripatetic Hong Kong Gardeners Club has finally found a permanent new home at Southsea's Café Havana, and will be open for business this Friday, 17th October with live music from Showcase 08 winners Melodramas and Canadian indie popsters Coast. Doors from 2000, music through till 0100, entrance is £4 on the door.
This week Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club features a full set from guest artist Paddy Taylor from 2000, with the regular Open Mike session following from 2130 through till Midnight. Doors open at The Barn at The Milton Arms at 1900 tomorrow, Thursday 16th October. Admission is FREE, more information can be found on the Facebook group page.

Despite fingers again being pointed following the release of their latest long player, it appears Noel and Liam have had enough of the many accusations of 'channelling' The Beatles levelled at them and took inspiration from other quarters.
I wouldn't have thought Sir Cliff of Richard was their bag, but the ardent fans of His Cliffness are accusing the Brothers Gallagher of ripping off the 1976 'classic' Devil Woman on new album track, The Turning.
I wonder if Sir Cliff is going to return the favour, he'd be guaranteed another Number One then...

Southampton venue The Hobbit will be hosting a day of live music this Saturday, 11th October, in aid of the charity PKD, the only UK dedicated to aiding sufferers of polycystic renal disease. Winchester Live is a new, week long, festival to promote the city's music scene, running from Monday 13th through to Sunday 19th October. A series of gigs have been organised by promoters Placid Piranha and The Girls In Green Shoes, at a variety of venues across the city. Bands so far confirmed to be appearing include Die!Die!Die!, Art Brut and Youthmovies (who kick off the festival at the city University's Vault venue on Monday 13th October). The Hong Kong Gardeners Club has upped-sticks and moved from the basement bar of The Jolly Sailor to the swanky sounding Seahorse Showbar (what was The Frog On The Front). The first night at the new venue will be this Friday, 10th October, and will feature DJ sets from Matt Seeney, Paige Gregson, Phil Harvey and Abbie Eales plus live music from You Love Her Coz She's Dead. The fun runs from 2000 through till 0230. Tickets are £4.50 but, owing to licensing restrictions tickets, can't be purchased on the door. Instead they're available on-line from WeGotTickets.
The Edge of The Wedge hosts the PompeyMusic website's awards ceremony this Sunday, 12th October. The event starts at 1500 and will feature DJ sets from Udy (Kiss My Bass, Waster) and Ruby Soho (Chaos) amongst others. Admission is FREE and there's still time to vote in the awards, you'll just need to register on the website.
Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club this week features a special performance by local singer-songwriter Aitch, who'll be on-stage at The Barn at The Milton Arms from 2000 till 2130 tomorrow, Thursday 9th October; the Open Mike session follows afterward till midnight. Doors open from 1900, admission is FREE.

This week's Waster coincides with John Peel Day, the annual celebration of the late DJ's musical legacy, so fittingly features live sets from two hotly tipped local bands, The Daisy Riots and Fresh Legs. Add to this a selection of fine alternative tunes spun by the Southsea Mafia DJs and you've the makings of a fine Thursday night's entertainment. The scheduled Spiritualized gig at The Pyramids on Tuesday 14th October has moved to The Wedgewood Rooms, original tickets remain valid (contact the venue's box office for refund information).
This week's Waster doubles as the after-party for the Showcase 08 competition, with the full force of the Southsea Mafia DJs in effect, armed with the best indiepunkelectrorock'n'rave in town. Portsmouth's Envy nightclub will be open for the usual shenanigans from 2200 tomorrow, Thursday 2nd October; owing to a PowerFM party in sister club Liquid entry will be via the Envy doors only. Admission is a mere £2.20 before 2300, rising to £3.20 after, and more information, including how to get yourself on the guest list, can be found on Facebook.
Southampton Indie label Sotones will be showcasing its roster with an all day shindig at The Hobbit this Saturday, 4th October. The line-up includes The Moulettes, Haunted Stereo, I See Sparks, Modernaire, Jackie Paper, Peter Lyons and Rob Skipper & the Musical Differences, with bands on-stage from 1400. The fun runs through till 0300, and entrance is FREE before 2200.
The Grand Final of The Wedgewood Rooms' Showcase 08 competition takes place tomorrow, Thursday 2nd September, and features Almeida, Melodramas, Rusty Sheriff & Friends, Holy Roller and Shegotsick. Good luck to all the bands taking part though, to re-use my lame Highlander reference of a few week's back, there can only be one winner. Doors open at 2000, admission is £5.
Funkt-If-Ino returns to The Wedgewood Rooms this Saturday, 4th October, for a night of classic funk, soul and disco courtesy of Boba Funk, Darth Fader, Chewbazza and Jabba (aka the Funkt-If-Ino All Stars). Doors open at 2200 with admission £5 before 2230, £6 after.
The Hobbit hosts a fund-raiser for Cancer Research this Sunday, 5th October, featuring live music from The Blue Stragglers, EverAfta, Indigo Sun and Still Frame. Bands start at 1800.
The Visitors, a six-piece folk-rock band, and Two Fingers Of Firewater, a five-piece roots combo, are the guest artists at this week's Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club. Doors open at The Barn at The Milton Arms at 1900 tomorrow, Thursday 2nd October, with guest performances starting at 2000; the Open Mike session follows at 2200. Admission is FREE!
