Woolworths have announced that they'll no longer stock CD singles, sales having fallen through the floor thanks to the burgeoning download market. This is a shame as there's something about a single; the additional tracks from radio sessions or the dire remix that you only play the once adds to the value of the catchy tune you bought the thing for in the first place. But what do I know, I download tracks from iTunes so it's probably all my fault anyway.
All is not lost however, as the UK's largest retailer of singles Woolies will still stock "high profile" releases, so you'll still be able to pick up the rush-released opus of whoever wins this year's Plop Factor X.

SUMO returns to The Wedgewood Rooms this Saturday, 31st May, with guest Joe Ransom (Fabric) joining the SUMO resident DJs, plus a live set from Social Sciences. Doors open at 2130, tickets are £7.
Bournemouth's Opera House hosts a night of Northern Soul this Saturday, 31st May, featuring a strong line-up of DJs (including Rowly, Steve Lyons and Emma Cox) plus eleven piece soul band DC Fontana. The event runs from 2000 to 0400, tickets are £10 in advance.
Portsmouth-based singer Rory Kennard and local five-piece The Elizans are the special guests at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club this week. The first act will be on-stage at 2000, after the first Open Mike session. Doors open at The Barn at The Milton Arms at 1900 tomorrow, Thursday 29th May, and admission is (as always) FREE!

Tonight's Waster again features the finest indiepunkelectrorockdance in town courtesy of the Southsea Mafia DJs, who'll be spinning the wheels of steel at Portsmouth's Liquid Envy from 2200 (where entrance is just £1 before 2230. As of June Waster will be moving to a more hangover friendly Thursday night, which is nice.
The second Oxjam event organised by Out Of The Void takes places at The Hobbit this weekend. The line-up for the all day session this Sunday, 25th May, features DJ sets from Ozpital, Out-Break, Udy, Old Harry Rox, Quextal, Jung, Paulie P and The Dude. Doors open 1300-0100 and there's a suggested donation of £2 to get in.
The popular Sunday afternoon concerts at Southsea Bandstand return for another series of free shows throughout the Summer. As in previous year's each concert covers a particular musical genre; this year's selection features Jazz, Bhangra, Folk, Ska, Salsa and Country & Western to name but a few. The first concert is this Sunday, 25th May, and has a Tribute/Cover theme. Portsmouth-based Pink Floyd tribute band Delicate Sound Of Floyd headline with support from One Weird Fish and Pathway. Details of this year's series of shows can be found on the VisitPortsmouth website.
The Hobbit hosts another all day mini-festival this Bank Holiday Monday, the line-up for which includes Queen tribute Break Free, Hawkwind support act Tribe of Cro, Wiltshire indie outfit Imber State Circus and Sophie's Pigeons from Manchester. The day also marks the farewell of local band Timshel who round of the live performances with their final set. Entrance is FREE before 1400, £3 before 1800 (£2 after) and last entry is at 0100.
The guest performers at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club this week are Milton Keynes prog-rockers Device and Portsmouth alternative rock outfit Infra Red. This week Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club features performances from Croydon's Tim Eveleigh, local singer-songwriter Ade Cull and Isle of Wightfolksters The Well Being. Doors open at The Barn at The Milton Arms at 1900tomorrow, Thursday 15th May, with the first band onstage at 1915 prompt. The regular Open Mike slot follows the guest entertainment at 2215. Admission is, as usual, FREE!

Tonight's Waster features live music from indie dance outift The Haunts and ex-Rolling Dog types Melodramas, plus the usual fine selection of indiepunkelectrorockdance courtesy of the Southsea Mafia DJs. Doors open at Liquid Envy in Portsmouth at 2200, entrance is £1 before 2230 (£2 before 2300, £3 after).
The Talking Heads will be hosting a second charity showcase this Sunday, 11th May, featuring performances from the best new talent in Southampton (line-up to be announced). All profits from the evening will be donated to the Hampshire Autistic Society and Southampton-based charity Scratch; entrance is £3, the first act is on-stage at 1930.
Hipshaker returns to The Wedgewood Rooms this Saturday, 10th May, for a rollicking evening of classic 60s soul, funk and R&B. In addition to the resident DJs there'll also be live music from ska outfit Orange Street. Doors open at 2130 and tickets are £5.
This Sunday, 11th May, is Love Albert Road Day, a celebration of the fine avenue that we all know and love. Aside from all the fine entertainments on offer along the Portsmouth's own Bohemian boulevard (including the Tour de Albert prize draw, a busking competition and a display of vintage bikes) the Edge of The Wedge will be hosting FREE entertainment from Wiservice, Passenger and Whisky Sour from midday. More information can be found on the event's Facebook group.
Power-pop out fit Dielle and local roots outfit Two Fingers of Firewater provide the guest entertainment at Roger Courtney's Open Mike Club this week, with the regular Open Mike session following from 2200.
